64-bit AMD Processor

What are the fastest three 64-bit AMD processors today?

I'm about ready to start building my next machine. What would you consider the best bang for the buck in 64-bit AMD processor/mobo combos? I'd like a mobo that could support at least 8Gb of RAM.

I'll be starting with 4Gb (2 DIMMS), and the rest of the specs will look something like this....

1 - 250Gb primary hard drive (O/S (Vista Ultimate) and programs)
2 - 1Tb drives (1 for storage, 1 for backup)
1 - 256Mb video card. Not real important here because this machine will be used primarily for Photoshop CS3 and Office 2007.
1 - sound built into the mobo.
1 - DVD+/-RW w/Lightscribe.
1 - DVD ROM drive.
1 - case - don't want anything larger than a mini-tower.
1 - built in media card reader.

Anything else I need to think of?

DOH! Just read on the Adobe site that Photoshop CS3 does not come in a 64-bit flavor. It will run in a 64-bit environment, but it's still just a 32-bit app. My guess is that this means that it will not be able to work in anything over the 4Gb limit.

So, that being said, take the 64-bit processor out of the above equation and tell me what you would build that uses a 32-bit quad-core processor? Looking for bang-for-the-buck.

You'll need a power supply too. :D

Any of the dual core and quad core processors from AMD are 64 bit processors. And the on-die cache for each core shouldn't matter too much. What you might be more concerned with is the process-size, with 65nm processes being the current generation for AMD.

32-bit applications will still run, since AMD made sure things were backwards compatible in the instruction set for the processors.

One thing to remember is that the current quad-core processors from AMD contain a bug that will crop up extremely rarely if you run the processor on a server-type of machine. It shouldn't bug you at other times. But the fact that there is a bug in the processor gives a lot of people pause when they go for the Phenom (AMD quad-core). There are BIOS fixes for the current chips... or you can wait a couple of months to purchase a processor from the new batch (B3 stepping). I would buy one now, since the price-to-performance is very competitive with Intel, and they are still solid processors.

Oh and BTW, the bug is named: Translation Lookaside Buffer bug. It has to do with how the processor looks up data in its caches, and it is exceedingly rare. It shouldn't pose problems for you and your applications, but it's still there.

I seem to recall an Intel floating-point processor bug that made big news at the time.... ;) Don't have data for what it did to sales figures tho.

Intel covered it up until way after the processor had been out. I think it was two years after the processor was introduced that Intel coughed up the goods.
