NWN: Gulnan's Nightmare

Post by RedSirus »

Alright, I played some NWN today with some friends from my hometown; THZ*KitZune and THZ*Laurelin. I admit it.

In any case, I have an awesome story I figured you guys would want to hear. It's based around Beggar's Nest - the undead filled region of Neverwinter. The party consisted of Shae Sandslayer (Laurelin), wielding two shortswords and posessing a high dexterity; Jackal (KitZune), weilding two rapiers and also posessing a high dexterity; and Gaelon, son of Glorion (me), wielding a greataxe over his head and wearing plate mail.
(All magical armor went to me. Studded leather restricted these guy's movements)

So anyways, we're going through Gulnan's lair, when I swap armours for a second, and try on some Studded Leather +1. It's nothing special, and so I swap back to my plate mail. But there's something wrong... I can't. At first I thought the leather was cursed, but I could put on any other armour except for my plate mail. I couldn't even select it to move it out of my inventory (I still have about 40 pounds of deadweight on my character). So I can't swap back to my original mail, and the next best thing I have is studded leather +1 (which my dwarf thinks is ‘flimsy’) and a robe of light (not even armour!) and so my character does the first thing that comes to mind…

He has a dejemma to end all dejemmas, so to speak.

Still wearing his leather armour and greataxe high overhead, he wades into the nearest horde of undead, and before combat begins, totally removes his armour and follows through with a mighty turning. “See me and run, boys!” he calls out. Four zombies drop instantly, and another one runs. Gaelon puts his greataxe away and starts to beat the dying crap out of this thing with his bare hands. He’s got Bull’s Strength and Power Attack, too, so he’s not dealing small amounts of damage. The rest of the party just stops and stares as he chases the thing into the next room…

…right into the Zombie Lord. He downs the zombie just as the Lord closes in to attack range. The party rushes in and starts fighting with the Zombie Lord, using magical weapons to pierce its defenses. Galeon manages to get a dispel off on it, removing it’s damage resistance, and he starts pummeling the Lord itself with his bare fists, dealing as much damage as everyone else. “HA HA!” he cheers after the killing blow is dealt, and poses dramatically for a second before running off into the next room.

The rest of the dungeon consisted of Gaelon charging around, unarmed and unarmored, laying waste to all the zombies he could find. Screaming prayers and profanities, Gaelon disappeared down a side corridor while the ‘real’ fighters took out the animated armours near Gulnan’s lair. When Gaelon returned, they stood before the creature’s lair.

Gaelon quickly formed a plan. “Go straight for her!” he said, “I’ll go straight for the altar, and when it’s gone, I’ll come back and Silence her.”
“You’re going to be turning, right?” Jackal said.
“Every step of the way!” a gleam of an idea hits his eye. “By Moradin’s beard. Why don’t I silence you now? That way she can’t resist the magic.”
“Uh… how long does silence last?”
“Not long enough…” Gaelon sneers, and begins enchanting people. Bulls Strength and Endurance for himself, Magic Circle Against Evil for Jackal, and a Bless for everyone. “Go!” he shouts, and the door opens.

Jackal and Shae go left, Gaelon (still unequipped with anything) goes right. He turns undead, dropping three and sending a warrior fleeing. A skeleton mage aims a spell, but Gaelon punches it hard, disrupting the spell. He makes it to the altar after another turning, and with two mighty blows, destroys it outright. The undead sink to the earth. Across the room, the sounds of battle can be heard. Jackal and Shae are fighting with Gulnan, two skeletons, and a summoned shadow. And Gulnan is just firing off spells.

Gaelon figures she’ll be able to resist the Silence, and tries to fire it into the melee. It’s too difficult to aim, and so, charging across the room, he silences himself and wades into melee, disrupting the spell and shutting down her power. Jackal strikes down one of the skeletons quickly, and then we all begin focusing on Gulnan. With a mighty (Bull’s Strength, Power Attack) blow, Gaelon sends the yuan-ti sprawling on the ground, destroying the summoned creatures.

Not one member of the party died during the whole encounter.

Afterwards, Shae and Jackal start looking for treasure and cleaning up the odd undead warrior that somehow survived. Gaelon does the same, and runs into one: his old friend, the skeleton mage, which he passed on the way in. A kick to the shin seriously wounds it, and as it tries to get a spell off, Gaelon sees the opportunity and attacks, crushing the skeleton’s skull and downing it.

They returned to the Halls of Justice victorious, and Gaelon even got some new armour he can wear (Kit and Laur thought I didn’t have anything else to wear, and that I was merely goofing off instead of exploring the strange aspects of a dwarven priest’s psyche when surrounded by undead and unable to defend himself). The catch?

The new armour which they so desperately want to cover Gaelon in is magical, and he can’t wear it until he get’s a level up.

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a target=_top href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a target=_top href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... s at: 12/30/02 12:18:51 pm

Once in a while I've had an inventory item get "stuck" or it disappears from my inv. when I'm moving stuff around. The latest patch seems to help, but save-and-reload has always brought it back to normal for me.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming
