I got a copy from a friend to play, but I don't like how they did it. Why should you pay to maintain troops by reducing your income of gold? Thats like hiring 50 people to mine and only letting 30 actually work! Then there is the balance between toweres and basic units. In WC2 a wall of towers can hold back an assualt from grunts and not take alot of damage, but in WC3 my entire base is destroyed, troops and all, by 12 grunts! How in the world can 12 grunts take out 8 guard towers and 8 swords men! That is not lagisticaly possible conserning that they are out guned and can only attack things next to them wail the towers are wailing at them from afar.

I am sticking to WC2. I think they ruined the balance in WC3. The game is too centered on attacking and defending with troops and then limiting the amount of troops you can support. For crying out loud the basic millitary unit takes 2 food to begin with! You only have 90 food, and if you only build the basic unit and nothing else, thats only 45 troops (not accounting for the workers you have to build to support the production of the troops and the dwindling income of gold per each mner as you make more troops).

All the tactics I use to use to win in WC2 no longer work in WC3 cause of the major balance problem between fixed impacements and troops. How in the world does one swordman take out a tower on his own and not die?
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Don't Recal Who Said This

I like the upkeep idea. The upkeep is there to prevent players from amassing huge armies and just letting them sit around their base fully defended waiting for the opponent to attack and lose their troops while stockpiling large amounts of gold. It is encouraging players to send forces out to attack the enemy because your creatures will either triumph over the enemy base or die which will increase your income allowing you more troops in the long run.

Grunts vs swordsmen? Grunts are more powerful than swordsmen. Swordsmen require two food spaces but grunts require three (their stats are much better). At 12 grunts vs 8 footmen you're really looking at 36 vs 16 food spaces. You've outskilled two to one and the towers aren't going to make up for it.

Also think about the system limitations. Having several forces of 200 troops is going to be a huge system drain. That is a lot of polygons and the battles would start going rediculously slow even on higher end systems.

Your WC2 tactics not working in WC3? As you said, the focus of the game was changed for WC3 to make it a much more aggressive offensive game. Personally I like the aggressive shift cause it suits my style of play, but that not may be the case for you. Honesty if the game did play the same it wouldn't be as fun and it would be the same old game with different graphics (not that there was anything wrong with WC2). Maybe the new WC3, tragic as it may be, just might not be your style. Give it a chance, and good luck.
<img src="http://www.rit.edu/~mbt1074/Angel%20Sig ...

At first I didn't know where Timberwolf was coming from, but AngelFlayer picked up on it. You were being attacked by orcish grunts? That explains it (I thought you were defending with the same units you were being attacked with).

Grunts are hands down more powerful than swordsmen, but orcs take more resources to maintain. It's like wondering why your marines are getting buried by dragoons or hydralisks, in StarCraft.

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ...

Yeah, I actually really like the how they've changed it from WC2. WC2 was great, but I think the stricter limitations on how you can grow your army, and the contrasts between the armies, will make the multiplayer more interesting. Like Flayer said, the game encourages attacking more then previous games of the genre, but IMO still maintains an enjoyable amount of planning and building. I just beat the single player campaign, so I'm thinking I'll try battle.net soon.
XMEN|FireFro[DTM] --- "I hate shocklances"

"Join me or die, can you do any less?"

Finally got to play multiplayer for the first time today. I kicked my friend's ass with undead and then we thought we'd play strangers on battle.net

Got spanked three times in a row. First two times were simple ass kickings that just resulted from me not knowing the best order to develop things. The guys that beat me weren't that great. The third time I was doing really well, then the guy shows up with dozens of ghouls and necromancers. By the time the battle was half over I was fighting about a hundred skeletons. Interesting strategy.

So... who wants to play online?
XMEN|FireFro[DTM] --- "I hate shocklances"

"Join me or die, can you do any less?"
