Alright, I'm gonna post my first impressions:

Although the game runs slow as mollasses on my computer it is probably one of the most awe-inspiring games I've yet played graphically.

But before I go on with how good it is and how nice and pretty I'd like to say something I noted. While this game is huge and has such an open scope, I can't detect any feeling among the people. The nice thing about playing BG2 or PS:Torment is that the characters react to you (because they've been scripted to do so) but in this game all the store owners do the same thing... there's no "life" to it. I know I'd be expecting miracles for all the characters to have a pizzaz about them.. but still. Although, with that said, it's still early in the game and I've yet to get anywhere.

Now as far as the positives... what a game. *whistles* She's definitely pretty. Everything Bug says applies. I like how you can do just about anything given the proper equipment. It's all I can do to quit the game. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

This is *definitely* not a game for the "power-gamer" type. Not a hack & Slash - instead it's probably one of the best games to try to pretend you are the main character. Unfortunately, the thing I mentioned above about the characters lacking emotion/reaction to you does kind of bug me - and it's hard to stay "in character" when you notice everyone saying the same thing to you. Maybe it's because I haven't accumulated any kind of reputation yet. *shrugs* Something to work through.

Anyways, I'll give it a 8.5/10 (solely because of the negative I noted) - BUT if as the game progress I notice a change in it, or a patch adjusts it a little then I'm definitely going to change my rating to a 9.5 (not a 10 because it's such a resource hog).

It just occured to me, however, the reason why the characters might be so indifferent to me. It's probably because of the following:
1) I'm a stranger in a strange land and they don't know me
2) I'm used to being the Son of Bhaal in BG2 and that messes my perspective a bit

Buuuut - why do all the characters behave the same?? Why can't some love me and some hate, or have a kind of natural disposition? Argh. It really makes it tough when EVERYONE treats you the same way.

:P

Does anyone remember one of its Elder Scrolls forefathers? A little game known as Daggerfall?

I was SO hyped about that game. It was huge, the minor dungeons were randomized, and you could be or do anything. Bought it the day it was released.

It was ok, but I lost interest too soon because nothing drove me on. There was a limited handful of NPC sprites, they all acted nearly the same, and the game was a little TOO open-ended and failed to grip me with a plot. It was impossible to deny the work that went into the game - the bookstores Bug mentioned were there, full of history for the land, there were many guilds and complex relationships - but I didn't find it that much fun. The graphics were also pretty low-key and some bugs didn't help. Ended up kind of turning me off of Bethesda, actually.

Morrowind is an attempt to right these wrongs. Sounds like they've made a good effort but some problems remain.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

Alright, I'm updating my review a little.

I've played this in a manner similar to any other junkie. I needed my fix and this game was giving it to me. Before I continue, I stand by a good few words about what I said above, but still WOW.

I'm starting to completely change my mind about the "immersion" of the game and you totally get used to the NPC being cold. What I really LIKE about them, however, is not so much what you can say to each other (using the hypertext) but the way they react to you as you walk up to or by them. Right now I've gained rank in the Mage guild and everytime I walk by a mage they're like "Do you wish to talk to me, Master?" or a stranger in the streets, "What do *you* want? I'm damned busy and don't have time to talk!" and it's sooo cool.

Furthermore, it's so funny how true my statement about this not being for powergamers rings. You can't go in there with the attitude that I want to make huge gold and take over a guild and then exploit the flaws. If you want to get an amazing gaming experience out of this game, play it like it was meant to be played. Develop your own stories. If you don't like the fact that it's too easy to steal from under someone's nose (if you're a theif) then don't. Pretend you can't. This seems to be a basic concept that everyone seems to miss. Don't force the developers to hold your hand. Roleplay the damn character. *sighs* This is an amazing game that actually gives you a true freedom to play a character in a living world. *amazing*

Now I'm *REALLY* looking forward to NWN. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Mo.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uatheist.showPu ... t at: 5/11/02 7:38:26 am

NWN is supposed to come out in June, as is WC3, both of which I plan on getting. I have no idea when Planetside will be out... probably not for a long while.
XMEN|FireFro[DTM] --- "I hate shocklances"

"Join me or die, can you do any less?"

OK, so I just got morrowind about an hour ago, and I keep diying for doing dumb things.... SO I've had 2 charachters that are dead, and I don't know how to save, so when I do die, I can go back and start from a relatively safe place.....

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

We managed to discover a greatly entertaining bug in Morrowwind. It works something like this:
1. jump (you can also walk forward and jump)
2. As soon as you hit the ground press the rest button
3. rest for one hour or so and furiously mash the jump button

Accidentally did that with a beginning level character (acrobatics 10) and he jumped straight up, about twice the height of a silt strider, and tragically died when he hit the ground. We did it again while jumping forward and he jumped forward at an impressive speed and covered a fair amount of distance (several screens)

Now, we did this again with a character who had acrobatics of 100. Upon successfully forward uberjumping, the character immediately catapulted himself skyward with sufficient force and speed to put himself into orbit. The ground was completely obscured by fog and he was covering distance at such an incredible speed it took him longer to load a new part of the map than to fly through it. About a minute or so later he met a catastrophic death when he hit the bottom of the ocean way off the coast of the city Vos (one of the NE islands) The character did not however begin his flight in Vos. The character had originally been in the city of Vivec.
<img src="http://www.rit.edu/~mbt1074/Angel%20Sig ... "0">
We are right, praying metal tonight. ROFL.... I'll have to try that... Ok.. so what types of characters are you guys using? I've got a Dark Elf with a bunch of magical powers, but no real hand to hand skillz... (I created this class, so it'd be an adventurer.)

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

I prefer most of the skills in the stealth catagory with some minor magical skills. The Khajit are superior thieves but boot and helmet restrictions irk me and I refuse to be an elf of any sort so I take Bretonian. Sneak, Marksmanship, Arcobatics, Light Armor, Alteration, Enchantment, Speechcraft, Mercantilism. With those skills you can join the H'laau house and the Thieves Guild no problem. If you develop another area of magic you can join the Mage's guild and Telvanni house. Mobility is my main concern and alteration really helps out there. I use sneak so much I rarely ever have to buy equipment and have gotten my hands on all kinds of delicious goodies.

Sometimes walking can be a serious pain, here's a way to cover large distances quickly. Somewhere east of Fort Hawkmoth (just south of Ald'run) there is a woman that wants you to escort her to some coastal town further to the east. If you do she will give you boots of blinding speed. Fortify Speed 200pts and blind 100%. Blind 100% is bad but there's a way to get around it. In one of the Telvanni mushroom houses in Tel Ruhn (I think) you can plunder the corpusarium. You can either play they "where the hell does this key go game" or you can pick the locks or magically open then chests on the very top floor and take what's in them without getting in any kind of trouble for it. One of them contains the Curiass of the Saviours hide, which has perminant resist magica 40% or so. If you put that on before the boots it will cut the blind down to 60%, which means you can still tell where the hell you are going outdoors but doesn't work too well in dimly lit indoor areas.
<img src="http://www.rit.edu/~mbt1074/Angel%20Sig ...
