Salmon swimming upstream

Post by RedSirus »

This seems to be the right forum for it.

I was out in British Columbia with my girlfriend in August, and we found the river where BC salmon swim furthest upstream. Rearguard Falls, in and around Mt. Robson Provincial Park, is the last waterfall the salmon need to scale before reaching their breeding grounds thirty two miles further upstream.

Rearguard falls is eight-hundred miles upstream from the Pacific coast!

In a lot of the rivers where I grew up the salmon swim anywhere from 10 miles to 900 miles upstream (on the Columbia River).

*Unless they get chopped up by hydroelectric power plant turbines.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p090.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.showU ... andtm>XMEN Ashaman DTM at: 10/14/04 9:29 pm

Where along the Columbia River, Asha? I spent the summer in Portland, and found the area very beautiful.

When I was in Portland last time we had to go fix a network up in The Dalles. So we drove the entire Columbia River Valley. One of the most beautiful drives I have ever done. We also stopped at all of the salmon ladders. It was incredible.

<embed align=left src=http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf menu=false quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=217 height=166 type=application/x-shockwave-flash pluginspage=http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

You weren't much of a challenge - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Ice, Red:

The Columbia stretches all the way north to beyond the Canadian border, and it dips back down once before ending up (or starting at?) somewhere in the mountains of BC.

If you want to see beauty, drive up to Lake Chelan (about 4 or 5 hours north of the Dalles). Though I'll say that one of my favorite spots for fishing is right near Goldendale where the White Salmon river empties into the Columbia.

Red: if you can do it, go to a concert at the Gorge (in George, WA). It's near I-90 just as you drop down out of Vantage onto the river. I've seen a few concerts there and I'll tell you what... there is absolutely NO other place like it.

Oh and I was born in Kennewick (about 200 miles upstream of Portland).

I'm afraid I'm back in Ontario again, Asha, but I've heard of the concerts at the Gorge. Sounds pretty sweet.

While I was out west, I took a bunch of pictures, and have them on my website here:

<a href="http://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~jkh ...
Most pictures of my trip down the Columbia River Historic Highway (or whatever it's called) are in the July 11th section.
