The Old Ravster Finally gets a clue to Uncertainty Principle

Post by XMEN Ravok99 »

Gotta get back into my books, but Schroedinger's Cat was just explained to me again on the Science channel, and I think I actually GOT it this time!!

So, Nucleus ---[empty stuff] --- Electron

Define electron? Wave or Particle? Now I go to electron field, and the wave is the possibility curve of the particle. Then we go and grab our measurement of the wave, and get a location of the particle.

Probably oversimplified, as my Calculus is screaming at me that the measurement of the wave deals with limits and instantaneous speed, right?

Still, its a sight better understanding than I had yesterday.

"Death is not the end."-Ravok

Mmmm --- Beer opens up a higher energy state which can cause an increase in flux - potentially creating a Leap!!

Yumm - beer....
"Death is not the end."-Ravok

That's the idea.

The way I think of it is this:

an electron/photon/proton/whatever has so many energy levels called states. Each one having a certain probability.

I just imagine a HUGE (as in BIGASS!) board with a bunch of holes of various sizes and depths in it. Then you drop one marble onto the board and look away.

You don't know where anything is, so you don't know where the marble ended up. ALL of the holes are possible. The more likely ones are the bigger ones. When you look to see what "state" the marble is in, you've found out which hole it went into. The depth of the hole for me, corresponds to the actual energy content (some are more shallow than others... thus they have less energy to get into and out of than others do).

I also imagine a single electron as having the ability to go into a large number of different slots. Each one is equal, so the chances of getting into one are the same for another. All of a sudden an electron ends up in a slot. You can't tell which one until you look. (I think slots because the rules of probability are different for different particles.... the slot idea has its basis in statistical thermodynamics (the basis for quantum mechanics)... so I'm looking at things a bit differently sometimes.)
