Networking Issues

Post by XMEN_Hammer »

OK this is going to be long :/

I installed a small office network at my wifes store.
Includes the following components:
Small business server , OS-Server 2003
2 Point of sell comps, Dell Optiplex
1 Self built comp
1 Dell 24 port Switch

OK heres the problem.
When setting them up we had a issue with POS comp #2 registering on the network. ie (server is network DNS) Iceman came down and helped me resolve this issue by uninstalling the NIC and reinstalling, also had to hard IP them to be stable. For the last month things have worked fine. but for the last 2 days . The comps have been acting up at login. Especially #2 .
Error message: can not connect to all network drives.
I have 2 drives mapped, one to server for financial Software, and the second to Register 1 for the Point of sale software. After several reboots it may or may not login. If not I can go unplug #2 from switch and it will login into server, from there I just remap drive to #1 for POS software. Then we're running. but then end of day comes and I have to reboot for software issues that WILL happen if I don't. Been there done that ..
Also I have her finance comp set to run always (HD set to sleep after 5 hrs). Works fine.
Dell support has told me to update NIC driver and see what happens If this doesn't resolve it, then they say I have to reinstall OS Then they will consider it a possible hardware problem , and come look at it.
So I need HELP , I cant reinstall all this BS , SO HELP PLEASE

BTW , DAN what you doin SAT or SUN ????????

<img src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/hammer_ ...
Proud member ot the Soup Clan
Proud Member of the XMEN Clan
Proud Member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries
If you run, you will only die tired.

Strangely enough, this is NOT the first time I've had someone ask me about a similar problem. Here's what I did in that situation.

She was using her SBS as a DHCP server, and also had her network running inside a gateway router (outside it was her DSL modem). I disabled the DHCP server on the SBS machine, and allowed the router to set IPs for the network. The SBS I set up to have a fixed IP that was valid, but outside the normal assignment range of the router. (if router was set up to assign IP addresses from x.x.x.100 to .200, I set the server to x.x.x.99)

That solved most of it. You can give it a shot.

I'm also off work until next Thursday.

Oh...Hammer is NOT connected to any router nor will he connect it to the internet.

So I suggest that he remove any DNS settings and/or Gateway settings. The NIC might be looking for one, thus the increased traffic on that port.

Thoughts?

<embed align=left src=http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf menu=false quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=217 height=166 type=application/x-shockwave-flash pluginspage=http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

You weren't much of a challenge - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Ya, I didn't know if he'd be on a router down there or not. Note that you wouldn't HAVE to have the WAN side of the router connected to anything to have the internal DHCP work, just like we do with LAN parties, and they don't cost much - but we shouldn't have to get a router to make the network behave.

I assume the SBS machine is either running 24/7 or gets powered up well before the rest of the network? Must do this.

Regarding your suggestion, maybe. IMO, they either need to be set for DHCP or have assigned, static IPs, and either SHOULD work.

Well the thing is , DELL set it up before they shipped with this BS network setting ,IMO. And I have to logging to the network (ie: Small Business Server) they set up or they will not see each other. And Register 1 has to be up and running so when #2 comes up it logs into #1 as well as the network (ie: SBS), in order for the tracking of sales. Seems that the IP's is not the problem or connection, Its always when its trying to loggin the network. Thats when it hangs for 4-5 mins then goes on through without logging in. If it goes through OK , it takes about 4-5 secs to go through.

So it seems it a permissions type error or rather problem thats got me hung out to dry. And thats way past my level of knowledge. All these damn PW and stuff has me baffled. I need someone that really knows how to set permissions and rights on the sever and such. I'm 99 percent sure that will fix it..I just don't know anyone that I can call especially here..
<img src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/hammer_ ...
Proud member ot the Soup Clan
Proud Member of the XMEN Clan
Proud Member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries
If you run, you will only die tired.
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p090.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.showU ... ammer>XMEN Hammer at: 9/3/04 2:32 pm

No, I don't think it's permissions. A bad password or the like should be rejected pretty quickly. But if it's a communications problem, then it will keep retrying the connection until it hits the timeout limit.

You need to make sure you can ping each of the computers from the others, and if the IPs of each machine are really what you think they are. Use PING and IPCONFIG to do this, of course, you've been to enough LAN parties and managed your home network for some time.

Once its logged into the network its fine, but of coarse it not gonna ping if not logged in. The server will not allow it to see the others until logged in. It's the router so to speak.

Also I've done that of coarse....
<img src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/hammer_ ...
Proud member ot the Soup Clan
Proud Member of the XMEN Clan
Proud Member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries
If you run, you will only die tired.

Er, you got it backwards. Can't log on if it won't ping. You can fail the login, but if your IP addy is set right you can still ping other PCs on the network.

Hammer... check my post in the oV tech forum about this.

I've dealt with what sounds like the exact same problem on my previous networks. And all of the machines were either Win2k, XP, or upgrade-to-Win2k-from-Win9x machines.

It was always a problem of setting the proper permissions.... one computer couldn't see shared drives without doing a bunch of weird stuff. Even doing a search for the machine that had the shared drives on it did no good.

My dad and brother's machines had a similar problem. It was a simple fix of getting the permissions set up on both machines. Then fixing them. But going through it all and figuring out which components to add to the security settings took a while.

It was a combination of issues.

One...the workstation NIC's had problems with using Autonegotiation with the Dell ethernet switch. Once we set the NICs to full-duplex instead of Auto the connection issues went away.

Two...Turned off DHCP on the server and hard coded the IP's.

Three...There were some permission issues and we got them straightened out.

So far so good.

<embed align=left src=http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf menu=false quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=217 height=166 type=application/x-shockwave-flash pluginspage=http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

You weren't much of a challenge - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!
