AMD 64

Post by MegaDeath70 »

I have a question about the AMD 64 chips. I have a guy wanting me to build him a system with the new 64 chip. But i do beleive you need to have a 64 bit opertaing system to do so. Is this true? If so what is available at this time?

Is it possible to run windows xp 2002 sp1 with it till a 64 bit operating system is available?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

<img src="http://www.limalan.org/images/Sigs/Mega ...

"Come Get Some Dirty Old Men, If ya can hang !"

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... 0 at: 2/4/04 3:39 pm

AMD's 64-bit chips are 32-bit compatible. So you could, I think, run 16-bit MS-DOS on 'em if you wanted to, or 32-bit Win2k, XP, etc.

But to utilize the 64-bit goodness, you'd need XP-64 or one of the variants of 64-bit linux (there are a few out there that work fine on the new chips).

I survived the 8-to-16 bit and 16-to-32 bit revolutions, but I expect this one to go easier than either of the others. At one point my dad had a DEC Rainbow at the office. This computer had a 8086 (or was it 80286?) for PC compatibility, and it also had a Z-80 processor (Think TRS-80) so it could run CP/M.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

Windows XP 64 bit software just got a beta release recently. The software is valid for 360 days, roughly the amount of time before they release the final product. I don't know if they're charging for it or liscensing it as a free beta, but its an option.

And like Gambino said, you can run anything on em, you just can't use all the rich goodness that 64bit chips offer.

If the link is still there the above info was headlining on www.hardocp.com recently. Go ahead and check it out.

The world will not end in a blinding flash of light or virulent pestilence. Do you think MS rewrote all of XP (the parts that needed it anyways)? Or do you think they just changed the variable declarations to INT 64?

Um, it would be a little more complicated. I've worked with thunking (it's a way to make stuff work on a wider architecture than designed) during the transition from win 3.1 to 95, and it's cranky at best. Not to mention which you've got to take advantage of the new registers, instructions, and whatnot.

And don't forget that funky Intel significant-byte arrangement. That can really throw you for a loop if you're not careful; I wonder how they implemented it in the new wider architecture?

(And yes, I know you were joking, hence the smiley, etc... )

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming
