Building my new 'puter...

Post by BlackRider »

My 1.8 GHz P4 laptop is starting to feel slow, and the newest drivers for my nVIDIA are 45.xx (Dell GF4 mobile) and the 53.xx drivers don't support my card. On top of that I'm going to have to set up my laptop for school use. (dual boot WinXP and RedHat, and GBs of class specific software) So I can't really use it as a gaming platform anymore.

Right now I'm thinking:
P4 ~3 GHz or so
ATI 9600 XT, ATI 9800 PRO, or GF FX 5700

I need a direction for a MB, a cheapo case (all of mine are 7-8yr old cases w/ original power supplies, so I doubt they'd be worth anything... we got those when a 133MHz was top-of-the-line), and a cheap monitor (all of ours are 8-10yrs old and are dropping like flies).

I'm going to recycle an old sound card, ethernet card, and 13GB HD to start out with. Is there anything else that I'm missing?
COLORS!

I usually use www.sharkyextreme.com for recommendations on low or high-end components. He has some great selections.

I personally prefer Chieftec and Antec cases for my personal stuff. They cost a few dollars more but you get a hell of a case.

I think that I would go with these:

Motherboard: ASUS P4P800S-E Deluxe, around $90+
Comparison of new MB's on Sharkyextreme: Link

Case: ANTEC Aluminum Super Mini Tower Case with 350W Power Supply, Model "LanBoy" $64 at www.newegg.com
Link: www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp? ...

Motherboard comes with the Soundcard and Ethernet integrated. Then you can buy a 40gb drive from me for $30.
