Got a question...

Post by XMEN Ashaman DTM »

Okay... I've been thinking about this for a long time.

Anyone interested in a side project that would involve programming, art, engineering, and some playing?

That's no problem! So do I!

I'll get a spec / outline put together soon so that I can give a clear picture of what I have in mind.

Oh and, the people interested would have to be part of a brainstorm session over email.

I may/maynot have time. I really don't know right now, I have a major time issue with school and all, is it any type of project or do you have somthing in mind? If so could you tell us what sort of project it is. I would love to help if I can but I have very few of the skills you described and even less time to develop new skills

Okay guys... after playing around with a simulator that Gambino posted a link to, I've decided that I want to do something a bit similar yet different.

See... I've always been fascinated with space combat sims, but none of them really get the physics correct outside of a simple F=ma model. The other thing is that there is usually a hitbox for the craft, so when the whole thing has zero shields/energy/hull/etc. it dies. I'd think that there would be more than a few systems that you could hit.

The other thing is, how often have you played something where the craft were customizable? In Freespace2, you were able to switch out various weapons on various hulls. What about switching about different engines, comms, sensor packages, etc.? What about also providing basic training similar to what actual pilots have? (They have to know a great deal about their aircraft to have a license... so that in theory you could do some field work on them.)

The other thing that I forgot to mention that I liked about the shuttle sim that Gambino posted, was that you could actually land the shuttle. Given it's a delta wing, so it handles like an elephant with wings drugged up on valium, but there are other types of craft.

That's a bit of the vision. The first objective would be to get some artwork and ideas going... or even just a bunch of ideas. Nothing too technical or anything. Just a bunch of ideas. I'll send an email out to those interested on Friday with more details.

funny you mention landing the shuttle. I successfully landed a NASA shuttle simulator once. On the first try. It was rough, but a walk-away.

Would love to work on a spacefight sim.
