New Mother Board Wont Boot

Post by LoSTimberWolf »

I have just installed a New Mother Board, that uses DDR memory, and it wont boot. The indicator in the back says there is something wrong with the Processor one time then it will say something wrong with the Momory another time, and then go back and forth as I change things. The Processor (1.2gig, FSB200) and Memory (512, PC2100, I think) are both new, as well. I have had the Processor working in my old Mother Board, but can't test the DDR memory in any other machine since no others in the house can use it.

Here is the site with info on my New Mother Board:
<a href="http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/ ...

I have tried everything, I have even returned the Mother Board and gotten a new one thinking that was dead for some reason. The only thing that I can conclude from what I have seen is that the Mother Board is not compatable with anything lower the FSB266 even though the Manual and website say it can handle FSP133.

Am I missing something or does my conclusion seem to be the only explination of why the Mother Board does not work?
-LoS-TimberWolf{FF}
Vehicle Specilist

Does is spin the fans up for a few seconds then just quit? If so, tak the mobo out of the case, and quadruple check where the mainboard standoffs are located, and make sure it's not getting grounded out somewhere. It's a simplae mistake, and I've done it before.

Also, take booting the PC in stages. CPU only, CPU + RAM, then continue to add things with easch successful reboot, and make sure each component is working properly. When you replace the mainboard, It's like building a PC from scratch, and you need to treat it as such.

Once you've checked your standoffs, and are completely certain that the mainboard isn't touching the case, and everything is mounted properly, begin installing and testing each component individually. You cannot test the system with no CPU, as it will refuse to boot, so that is why you start there. As long as you have good components, and everything is installed correctly, and the PC gods are on your side while the Earth and Mars are very close together, you should have no problems.

One last thing- Make sure you've triple checked all the jumers on that mainboard. Most new mainboards have jumpers to switch the fsb from 200 to 266/333MHz manually before it'll work properly. On some the default is 200, but others it's 266/333 so triple check. That too would cause your system to not boot. Msi boards are generally rock solid once you get them running, as long as it's not a VIA chipset. I did get my old one to run stable, but it took a while, thanks totally to the crappy VIA Drivers.

Ok.. I just now started to look at the site, and here's what I found:

Quote:

From MSI's Webpage for the MSI K7N2 Delta Series:

CPU-
Supports Socket A for AMD Althon/ AthlonXP / Duron Processors @ FSB 266/333/400

Supports 600MHz up to AthlonXP 3000+ processor or higher

Chipset-
NVidia NForce2 spp chipset
Supports DDR 200/266/333/400

With that said, it may not totally support your processor, but it does support your RAM. when it says in the manual, that it supports fsb clock speeds of 133MHz, that really means the FSB will be at 266MHz.

Don't lose faith yet tho.. Check the other stuff I told you about, and then see if that didn't change anything.. you may just simply have an incompatible processor.

"Never, Never, Never Quit" -Winston Churchill

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... t>Spinning Hat at: 8/9/03 7:31 am

Ok, I bought a second processor yesterday and installed it just a couple of hours ago. IT WORKS!!!!!!!! I am in the middle of reformatting my hard drive to handle Win XP again. I hope to have enough of it done tonight to get some PlanetSide in before going to bed. I need to get some fragging done.
-LoS-TimberWolf{FF}
Vehicle Specilist
