Hosting question.

Post by FaLLGuY »

If I get a 1Mbps up and down why would it be a issue for my ISP if I host a server for gaming? I haven't asked them yet about it. I don't know if I should say anything or not if I get it.
<img src="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/planetburt ...

It shouldn't be an issues if it's a DSL line. But if it's Cable, then you'd be hogging all the available neighborhood bandwidth for your server. Also, check with your ISP about data transfer limits, as some are starting to put limits on it.

I HATE EZBOARD!!!

transfer rate is 4GB a month which is over 120 Megs a day. Is this a good thing?
<img src="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/planetburt ...

That's plenty for a gaming server, but I would password it like the MFP to keep it from filling with pubbers.

(Assuming, of course, that you don't download lots and lots of files or streams...)

You may also want to get a separate IP address for that box, or a router (and redirect the right ports to the server), for security reasons.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

If I had it open to pub would that suck up all that 120 megs? I don't know what this stuff means.. I don't down load much and all I use my PC for is gaming. I would like to have it open to the pub.
<img src="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/planetburt ...
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... I don't know what kind of bandwidth would be consumed by a server that was up 24/7 and open as a pub. I would think that yes, it could potentially use quite a bit.

I was assuming that you'd set up a separate PC and use it as a dedicated server. It doesn't really take much horsepower, so you could use an older machine. Personally, I wouldn't want a game server running on the PC I use all the time.

If you do set up a second machine for the server, you can buy a second IP address from your provider (usually about $5/mo), or you'll have to buy a router ($50-$75) to direct the incoming traffic to it, rather than your other PC, and to hook them both up to the internet at once. Also, hackers can see the IP address reported by the tribes server, and the router will have firewall capabilities to block them.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

Check this out. <a href="http://www.t2dedserver.com/netlesson3.h ...

If the server was empty for a day, that would be a day of no transfer, if it was full 24 hours a day that would be max. However, no server is full 24 hours a day so you have to imagine how popular you want your server to be and see if that will exeede your transfer limit.

I agree that you should run it on a separate comp if you want to be truely dedicated. Too many people I have seen that run it on their same computer they use all the time and the server is gone after a few days.

The Sk8 Park is running on a 500mhz and I think it runs fine, I have never seen any problems on it with a full server.

g/l

Tribes Clan DB - List your Tribes1/2 Clan, Guild, Fansite, League, or Script site
SnookNet Web Design - My web building adventures
Dragon Talon Mercenaries - Online Gaming Guild
PlanetTribes - Sp3ci@l pr0jekts
PlanetSide Shuttle - Newsie extraordinaire
Allied Tribal Forces - A PlanetSide alliance started by Tribesplayers

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... n at: 3/12/03 11:05:46 am

Yah, it's all about the connection really. Sk8 park runs on a p3 500 and 384 of ram, we just have a serious connection with plenty of bandwidth. It sounds like you'll have enough BW, you just need to watch your transfer limits.
---------
...the only real difference between the locals and visitors seems to be length of the vacation...

I have a AMD 1700+ XP 512Mb DDR333. It looks like I'm screwed when it comes to transfer limit for a pub server.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">
<img src="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/planetburt ...

Well, look at the MFP. It's passworded, but only because of a similar situation - don't want to use too much bandwidth. We make no secret about the join password; XMEN, DTM, BEML, etc. all know it or have access to it. And so it's not too hard to get a game going on it with our buddies dropping in.

You could also just password it during the workday or something, leaving it open on nights and weekends. Bet it'd get used pretty well then, and if you started pushing the transfer limit you just extend the passworded times a little. There should be scripts that will let you do things like this, and if not they're probably not too hard to write.

A separate computer is still a good idea, though.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

Or just start it up on Friday nights and take it down Monday morning. I can tell you from running 2 servers that 90% of our traffic, even with both open as a pub, is on the weekends after like 7pm est till like 2am....other then that they are pretty much empty, though there are some exceptions sometimes.
---------
...the only real difference between the locals and visitors seems to be length of the vacation...
