routers, and shared cable connections.

Post by Jester DTM »

Ok I have a CAble connetion heading into my router, and I am sharing the connection between two comps just fine. Cept... I can't host a server for Shoutcasting, or T2. I can see them on the lan, and from my comp I can join it on the net. But No one else can see them, and shoutcast can't find my server, I know it has something to do with port forwarding, some kind of query that has to send the request from the router, which is assigned the Cable IP to the computer that is hosting the server. Need some tips on what to look for, language etc.. I have the linksys, BEFSR41 Router. Two comps are plugged into it, and Cable is going into the WAN port. Any help appreciated, as I would like to be hosting a shoutcast. PS, when I plug the CAble inet directly into the comp, shoutcast works just fine.

996
Cerberus of THZ*
XMEN
Dragon Talon Merc
Allied Tribal Forces

<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/hosted/jester/si ...

Well, the problem is that INCOMING packets (that aren't requested from inside your router) are being blocked by the router. What you need to do is make a note of the internal IP of the system hosting your service (TS or whatever), then go configure your router for "port-forwarding". It's usually in the advanced config.

Each of the proggies that you want to run use a specific set of ports. It may be a couple of individual ports or a range. In your advanced config, you set up those ports to be forwarded to the IP of the comp running the service. Once you do that and reset the router, *POOF*, everything workie.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

hmm, ok I have 8000 being forwarded to my comp, and 28000 being forwarded to my other. Now by reset the router you mean turn it off and back on? Or Reset to default?

996
Cerberus of THZ*
XMEN
Dragon Talon Merc
Allied Tribal Forces

<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/hosted/jester/si ...

Typically when you make those kind of changes the router will tell you that it needs to reset to make the changes take effect. Or there is a button on the webpage to reset it.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Member of THZ - The Hounds of Zeus clan

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Unplug/replug, turn off/on, or hit the "reboot" button in the browser is generally the way to do it.

"Reset to default" will erase all your customization, so that's probably NOT what you want...

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

With the Linksys, you do not need to reset the router. I have it, and I have never had to reset it to make changes. Doublecheck the internal IP's, and make sure you've got the forwarding setup correctly. It does work exactly as Gambit described.

I HATE EZBOARD!!!
