Setting up a Non-Profit ISP for my neighborhood
Ok,<br>I am investigating the possibility of setting up a non-profit Broadband ISP for my neighborhood. I have probably 10-15 customers. I have polled some of them to see if they would pay $50+ a month to have broadband, so far so good. Now I am working with a friend that is our network/comm expert here at work. She tells me that she can help me get a T1 connection for probably less than $500 a month. So I am kicking the idea around of setting up a network in the neighborhood around this T1.<br><br>I want your pro's/cons, ideas, comments, feedback please.<br><br>As a side note this would allow me to host some Games servers of course. <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> <p><table border="0"><tr><td><embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ... <td><table border="0" style='Filter: Shadow(Color=#BB1403,Direction=255)'><tr><td><span class='usertitle'>XMEN Iceman [DTM]<br>Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan<br>Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild<br>Citizen of New Fenecia<br><br>"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman<br><br>- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!</span></td></tr></table></td></tr></table></p><i></i>

The idea is good, but the biggest problem will be cabling and distances from the network hub and the clients, without a repeater of some kind. <p><!--EZCODE CENTER START--><div style="text-align:center"><!--EZCODE FONT START--><span style="color:red;font-family:arial;font-size:xx-large;"><!--EZCODE BOLD START--><strong>I HATE EZBOARD!!!</strong><!--EZCODE BOLD END--></span><!--EZCODE FONT END--></div><!--EZCODE CENTER END--></p><i></i>

IIRC, the phone company is required to lease lines to you that aren't connected through the phone system proper. Not sure what the name of it is... but anyway, they don't like to do it but will. I've seen similar stories of folks doing that. So that's one option. Another is, of course, some form of wireless.<br><br>Be aware that T1 speed is just 1.5 MB! If you have 10 peeps using it at the same time, <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>and</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> you have effective load balancing, that's only 150 kb/s per user. Which is approximately the speed you get with your DSL. You'll need some sort of QoS control in your main router.<br><br>There are how-to articles out there on doing this sort of thing. I will of course be glad to help.<br> <p><!--EZCODE IMAGE START--><img src="http://www.xmenclan.org/xmengambit.gif"/><!--EZCODE IMAGE END--><br>XMEN member<br>Card-carrying DTM<br>OKL Fish-napper<br><br>Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.<br><!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em> The Tao of Programming</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--></p><i></i>

Re: Setting up a Non-Profit ISP for my neighborhood
Currently after testing dialup's at 3 houses we get an average of 24.6kbps. So 150kbps would blow their doors off. Also, the average user is 40-50 years old, so bandwidth usage after 9pm would be very low. Most my neighbors are approaching retirement age and do their browsing/downloading during the afternoon and early evening.<br><br>The wireless idea sounds very intriguing if I could get the coverage for the entire neighborhood. The distance would be less than 1500ft from end to end. <p><table border="0"><tr><td><embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...
