I surf the web, my computer starts slowing down untill its freezes minutes after initial slow down. Only way out of it is to hit reboot button. Only happens when IE is open and being used to surf the web. I can run media player for hours, write programs, write essays, but I can't surf the web for long. When that happens hit Ctl-Alt-Delete...bring up Task Manager...go to the Processes tab. Click on top of the CPU column to sort by CPU usage percentage...make a note of which process is eating up CPU cycles. That process is probably the culprit. Then do a search on Google with that process name and the words "slow down" and see what you find.

It is a good place to start.

Oh...also what type of Antivirus Software you running? That problem reminds me of a problem we had a work with a corrupted version of the Norton Antivirus definitions kept replicating themselves until they had filled up the hard drive. You might update your defintions and run a full system scan.

Good luck!

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/uxmeniceman.s ... ge=EN>XMEN Iceman at: 10/4/02 10:50:11 pm

Ice, I have a problem with those ideas. First off, the computer is locked up by the time the computer brings up task manager. There is not much time between the first noticable slowdown to lockup. I will try having task manager already open when I start surfing so that when it does start it will be stuck on the screen. Second, I do not have any antivirus currently installed. I am in the middle of getting the latest Norton.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Who Said This?

Locked by: LoSTimberWolf at: 12/25/01 3:15:23 am

RAm, get some new ram now before you can't boot at all.

996
Cerberus of THZ*
XMEN
Dragon Talon Merc

<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/jester/minime.jp ...

It sounds like it could be a malignant virus eating your cycles. I would immediately run a virus scan, followed by a scan for adware.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

The RAM I currently have is not that old, one is a 8ns and the other is an older 10ns. The youngest one is only about 2 years old. Jester, if it was the RAM going bad then it world effect other applications as well as IE. Since I have been able to have my system run for 24 hours without bombing running Office, it can't be the RAM.

Gambit, as I have stated I do not have an antivirus currently installed. The only antivirus we have in the house is the old Norton 2000, and I am looking into getting the latest and greatest. All I need to do is get some money scraped together and set a time to go to Bestbuy just north of my school.

I am currently running task manager as I surf the web to see if I can catch the problem before my system locks up.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Who Said This?

Locked by: LoSTimberWolf at: 12/25/01 3:15:23 am

d00d, I know you said you haven't got a scanner installed. You'll have to get one, obviously. But several virus scanners are available on a trial basis that you can download and use right away, such as McAfee's
<a href="http://download.mcafee.com/eval/evaluat ...

I think Norton's also has one that scans for viruses but doesn't fix them. But if you have NAV 2k, then you should just be able to update your definitions and be good to go.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

Ok, I will be buying the latest Norton in the next two days. I have also pinned the problem and believe that it can be fixed. The problem is caused by the same damn sound card, that even being on its own IRQ its causing my system to lock up with or with out it being in use. I will further test this when I get the time to take the card out and put my old card back in.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Who Said This?

Locked by: LoSTimberWolf at: 12/25/01 3:15:23 am

Eek. If it IS the soundcard (I don't see how, but if it is), and not the drivers for it and such, that's a candidate for the ol' Office Space treatment for sure.

<img src="http://www.xmenclan.org/images/gambit/p ...

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

i sorta thought it could be a problem with a "memory leak"?

something in IE causing pages to just sit there in the ram and not clear it out... thus filling up your ram rather quickly, causing a total freeze when it is completely full. more ram would just let you view a little more b4 you freeze. i don't know if this is even possible, or if you've got the problem solved. i agree it seems strange that it could be the sound card. did you say you did reinstall IE?

just my 2 scents.

My system was redone from the bottom up software wise. What brought me to the conclusion of it being the sound card is sound bombed in T2 just before the system locked up, and then when I tried to play media player to listen to CD it locked up again. I am going to put my old sound card back in and it should be fixed.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Who Said This?

Locked by: LoSTimberWolf at: 12/25/01 3:15:23 am

Here is an update to my situation:

I thought by changing to my old card my problems would be solved. The problem I had sought to correct has been corrected, no more locking up. But due to the old age of my old sound card (Fortissimo) and that Win XP has given it the wrong drivers, I can't find any drivers for it on the internet designed for XP, I no longer have any sound.

My current situation: No sound, No CD playing, No DVD playing (the software Gambit ICQed me will not install without the CD), No Game Playing. I am currently looking into buying a new sound card. My preference is a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and I am hoping that the card will work with my Geforce which is the problem I had with the Sound Blaster Live.

I have a hercules Sound Card, and it works and sounds great. I only spent $35 on the Gamesurround Muse XL, and you can spend more if you want to, but Mine is 5.1 Dolby capable, and it sounds awesome. I'm afraid I've already blown a set of speakers, this card puts out that much power. (And I DID have it up a little loud... Explosions in T2 have a lot of bass, don't ya know?)
