Vid Card Question

Post by Slothario »

Allllrighty...I'm going to go ahead and get a new video card, mainly cuz I've got BF1942, but it's really choppy. I've tried changing the settings, but nothing really seems to help. Add in the 20-25 FPS I get in T2, and this tells me it's time to buy. Now, I'm looking at the G4 Ti4200,4400,or4600. I've read several reviews on each one, but I really dont know what the tech-speak means. I know the 4200 is the cheapest, but if I go with the 4600, I should be set for a while. The 4400 64mb uses faster RAM modules, but it might be a bottleneck in the somewhat near future...etc. Soooo...what I would like here is what you would buy if you had the funding to do so? I dont really want to spend more than I have to, but I will spend if it means it takes care of it for a while and the increase in performance is big enough. I just bought a Aopen 128MB ti4200. I got that one because they use higher-quality memory than most. $140.

With a Radeon 9700 Pro or ti4600 costing $300-$400, I'd rather be slightly behind on the hardware curve and upgrade more frequently than blowing the budget and sticking with the same card for a longer time. Games can't follow the high-end hardware for the most part anyway, because it takes time to develop and they have to sell copies to people who don't have the latest.

But if you want the current hottest gaming card, the Radeon 9700 Pro is it. Cheapest I've seen it is $325 or so. nVidia's answer to it should be out around or slightly after Christmas.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

I like the Ti4400, but the 4200 is right around that performance range. WHay vid Card do you have now? Maybe a new Mainboard and RAM would help you more than a new vid Card...

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

Personally I was leaning towards the Ti4400 to begin with up until a few days ago, when I checked the prices on them. Saw a eVGA 4400 for 200, while the 4600 is only 30.00 more. Sooo..that got me to looking again and I was just wondering if the extra potential was worth the extra money. Personally, I've never been a big fan of buying the bestest out there only to see it outdated in 6 months. So long as my games run good, I dont mind being behind the curve.

I aint got /\/\4|) 5|<1||5, I got B4|) 5|<1||5
Proud Member of The Dragon Talon Mercenaries
Proud Memeber of The XMEN Gaming Clan
Professsional Thread Killer

Really not much difference between the 4400 and the 4600. Just clock speed. But get a 128 MB version of either.

With a ti4200 you can usually argue the point that 64 MB is good because a) cost and b) the 64 MB is clocked faster, but I don't think that argument applies to the 44/4600.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

Just ordered the eVGA4400. With any luck, it'll get here and install with no problems.
