WinXP and Networking help?

Post by Gryphon »

Ok here is what I have right now starting at the street.

DSL line comes to a jack in my den, my DSL modem connects to the jack, a 4 port Netgear switch plugs into the modem, 3 computers plug into the switch. All the computers get on the internet with ZERO setup, they all grab their own IP's.

My problem comes when trying to get the computers to talk to each other for file transfers or sharing printers. I have run the networking setup wizard in 100 different combinations without luck....well with some luck. I can get two of the computers to see each other but not the third. Im sure a router would sove my problem, but I'm trying not to spend the money.

So, is there a simple way to make this setup work that I am just not seeing, and if a router is the best bet, what one do you suggest getting?

Thanks

Tribes Clan DB - List your Tribes1/2 Clan, Guild, Fansite, League, or Script site
SnookNet Web Design - My web building adventures
Dragon Talon Mercenaries - Online Gaming Guild
PlanetTribes - Sp3ci@l pr0jekts

I haven't tried networking WInXP without a router. That usually requires 5 mins of setup with the router, and then you're golden. (You'd save some $$$$ too with a router, BTW) If you go with the router, I have a Linksys BEFSR41 and I've had it for 2 years with no problems. Gambit and Ice will say get the Barricade, and Someone else will say buy the D-Link. It's really up to you. I installed a D-Link for some friends yesterday, and frankly, the interface sucked, and wasn't very intuitive.

I have done numerous security scans from <a href="http://"http://www.grc.com"">grc.com, and the hardware firewall passes with flying colors, especially when the Universal Plug and Pray is disabled. So really, that part is up to you. Prices on all of them are competitive, so it's really about features.

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

At work my DSL modem is a router that has an IP, then each computer gets a internal IP 10.0.0.XX, same thing zero setup just plug in the comps and everything works, can even see shared files and printers without touching a networking setup.

If I pickup a router I want something that will be easy to set port openings on, and ports that stay open. My work router requires me to telnet in to it and type in some criptic commands to get ports open, and then the ports are only good as long as the ip lasts, when the modem picks up a new dynamic ip I lose the ports. So I am hoping that if I get a router for home the same thing wont happen since I have dynamic IP here.

Tribes Clan DB - List your Tribes1/2 Clan, Guild, Fansite, League, or Script site
SnookNet Web Design - My web building adventures
Dragon Talon Mercenaries - Online Gaming Guild
PlanetTribes - Sp3ci@l pr0jekts

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/uthzgryphon.s ... n at: 9/20/02 7:35:39 pm

Gryph, if you have file sharing enabled and your network is set up the way you say, then your PCs are open to outside attack - you'd have to run firewall software on each PC individually.

I'm not familiar enough with how XP does its networking to tell you how to set them up so they can see each other - but the first thing I'd do is check to see if they can ping each other's IP. I suspect your problem has to do with the way XP is trying to protect itself.

Most of the home routers are VERY easy to set up like you say you want. The Barricade, for example, will let you specify a particular PC for the DMZ and will forward all incoming requests to that machine - so it's open to attack, too. You can also specify a set of ports or port ranges to forward to an IP - multiple port(s), multiple IPs, as many as you like. The port forwarding doesn't expire until you tell it. You can configure the routers from LAN side with a browser, and from the WAN side as well if you allow it.

I recently bought a D-Link router with a built-in WAP, and it has fairly similar features. Not nearly as much flexibility, though. If you want control, the Barricade beats it out.

I'd be willing to sell you my used Barricade if you want it. I'd like to get $40 out of it at least - the thing did cost me $150+, and it has a print-sharing port on it as well as a serial port for terminal control or an external modem. You can find new ones of some brands in the store for $40-$50, but without the printer port and usually the serial port.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

I STRONGLY recommend a router with firewall. I hate having a software firewall run in the background, much less have anything else run when playing games.

Also...this is real basic...do they all have the same workgroup name? That has tripped me up before. Otherwise they will not see each other...and also make sure you have at least one drive shared...else they will not show up at all.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!
