Re: New Problems
You may have covered this already, but did you have the sound drivers updated? NOT the ones that XP gives, but the ones from the chipmaker's site?

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

Yup. All the drivers are updated to the most current ones.

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

Re: New Problems
Oh, so you've still got the stutter. Well, in that case, go buy a cheap soundcard from a local store where you can return it. AC-97 is about a SB16 equivalent, so you should be able to pick it up quite inexpensively. Anyway, pop that in and see if your stutter goes away. I'd be more willing to believe there's something wrong with that particular AC97 implementation than that your vid card is making your sound stutter.

UPDATE: Upon further research, you can find a lot of people griping about VIA chipsets and bus latency, and it's not a new issue. This article specifically references RAID, but they do mention that Via was nixed off of Maxtor's recommended hardware list. The AC97 is going to be using the PCI bus, too.
<a href="http://www.tech-report.com/news_reply.x ...

Another suggestion
Quote:
Go to the controlpanel, Audio and multimedia. Re: New Problems
I am gonna look at those articles.... I do have a soundcard that I was using. It was a Hercules Game Surround Muse XL. Same problems. I have seen lots of gripes about the VIA Chipset, but it almost seems inevitable when you have an AMD CPU....

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

Ya, I know. I've always used them in the past, but I have been pleasantly surprised with my emergency-purchase SiS chipset-based board.

Re: New Problems
OK Gambino... I read up on it, and seeing asI only have a 300W PSU in my system now, I decided to try the PSU Route. I mean yeah, 300W is fine for a Duron, but for the Athlon? Probably not, especially with the GF4. So I went on over to Newegg.com and bought an Antec 400W PSU for $65. (And I bought a Toshiba 16x DVD-ROM Drive for $41 w. Free Shipping. ) So, I should have those parts Thursday or Friday. Hopefully, that is the case, then I will run my system with the Box fan for a while yet, and add some fans in October, after the Obligatory trip to Fry's. (I may just go get a HDD Cooler that fits in a 5.25" Drive Bay, and blow some more air in there.)

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

Re: New Problems
I'd still be interested in the HDD cooler tho. Is it s 2 or 3 fan model?

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

Re: New Problems
2 fan.

The problem that I have with it, is that I don't have an inlet cover for it. So it just sucks everything in...things get pretty dusty in there....

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

Re: New Problems
Icky.... I have enough dust in my case already..... Besides, not having an inlet cover is not good for those with small children... (i.e. me)

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!
