Question about RAID

Post by XMEN Ashaman DTM »

Okay, I have two identical IBM DTLA 307045 harddrives. 45 GB each, and spin at 7200 rpms.

I also have an onboard Promise IDE raid controller.
I had set up my harddrives to be mirrored.

Or at least I thought I did...

Today, I booted my computer, and the Promise BIOS said:
"No Array Detected"
And gave me two options: "define array", "boot normally"

Now, this kind of worried me, since it is supposed to tell me if one of the drives will fail. So, I started the "Array Builder Utility" to check my harddisks.

It seems that it only detected my one harddisk. The other was completely non-existant, according to the RAID utility.

I remember just before moving that I had changed the cables around in my computer, but thought I had hooked them back up correctly. Well, it turns out that I didn't. Only the computer didn't tell me that. So the mirrored harddisks that I thought I had, don't exist. They are not in synch with each other.

I looked for the RAID info in my manual, but remembered that they didn't give a diagram for connecting the cables. I had to go online for that.

The problem is that I don't remember how to connect them, nor do I have the site where I got the info from. ASUS's site is no help. And Promise's site didn't help me either. I either was not looking in the proper places, or the sites don't have the info.
So... how do I connect them? I have an ASUS A7V266-E. It has onboard sound, and an onboard RAID controller.
There are four IDE sockets. I also have a CDRW drive and a DVD drive on the same channel.

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

The first two channels are your standard IDE channels. The other two should be the raid channels. I would connect both drives as master on those two secondary channels. Also, if I remember correctly you have to go into the bios to tell it how to handle the raid drives, either as raid...or it treats them like a secondary IDE controller...that is what it sounds like right now.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

but be careful!! If you try to set up RAID now, and do it wrong, you may lose what you've got.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.
