Triple Hit

Post by LoSTimberWolf »

1: SoundBlaster Live
It does not like my system, crashed the system after working for awail. I have installed it before in differnt configurations and each time it has caused the same problems. My brother has used this card before with no problems. The only thing that I have noticed that causes this is when the sound card and video card are on the same IRQ but I don't know how to change it. They work when one or the other is installed, but not both.

2: No DVD Rom Drivers or player. I bought it off my brother and he got his drivers and player from Win 2000 but I am on Win 98. Any Ideas, can't find any on the internet so far?

3: I also bought a printer off my brother. A deskjet 820Cse. The problem with this is that it won't stay connected. Physicly it is connected, but the system says there is no connection. I did everything it says for this problem and even reistalled it but it still won't work. Any ideas?
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Who Said This?

Locked by: LoSTimberWolf at: 12/25/01 3:15:23 am

1. Change the slot the sound card is in - move it at least two slots away from the video. That will change its IRQ. Also, if you have a VIA chipset on the motherboard, make SURE you have the latest 4-in-1 drivers for it. The VIA chipset has a problem with SBLive cards, but it can be overcome.

2. Call the manufacturer, or ask buddies. DVD player progs have a decoder embedded in them for security that they have to license. I doubt you'll find a truly free one. Though someone may have a spare they'd give you for free or cheap. I might, myself.

3. How's your printer port set up in BIOS? Try ECP or EPP, if you haven't. If you have, try the other one. Both these modes allow the printer software to do more to control the printer than the standard mode.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

1. The sound card is already 2 slots away from the video card. Windows assigned them both to the same IRQ, and I can't find a way to change it in the BIOS.

2. I have no clue to where the DVD came from. My brother bought it a year or so ago through the internet wail he was living in Austin. He had it in the computer I bought off him but he had removed the hard drive from it (atleast thats what he told me I had to put into it).

3. I only have one port that my printer can connect on, the other comport is for joystickes. I will try your idea out, even though last night I killed the 2 comports thinking that if windows had more IRQs to assign out then the Sound card and video card could be seperated since they both are on opposting ends of the list of things on the one IRQ, but it eneded up causing my computer to bomb faster.

I will crack my computer open again if nothing starts working when I work on it again.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Who Said This?

Locked by: LoSTimberWolf at: 12/25/01 3:15:23 am

1) then move it again. See below.

2) You should be able to find a label stuck or stamped on the thing. And there's always buddies for the software, which is probably easier anyway.

3) Your printer should be using a parallel port, not a COM port. They're not related. The parallel port doesn't even need to take up an IRQ (ECP does, EPP doesn't). Old-style joystick port never uses an IRQ - it's not a COM port. (If I told you how analog joysticks used to work, you'd shake your head in embarassment. Start a new thread if anyone's interested in hearing it.)

Windows will not reassign IRQs to a device that is already installed. There is often a setting in the BIOS that tells the BIOS to reassign IRQs, but that doesn't usually carry through to windows. (try it, though.) Changing PCI slots makes Windows think it has to install again, so do that while you've got those COM port IRQ's cleared up.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

I am currently looking into buying a newer Windows for about $6 through my college. I can get most windows for about $6 up to $15. If I do get a new OS then I will not be able to rebuild my computer untill either thanks giving or christmas.
-LoS-TimberWolfvehicle specilist

"Don't Drink And Drive, Get High And Fly Home" said by Neckhole
"To Love A Woman Is To Know Heaven And Hell Personaly" Who Said This?

Locked by: LoSTimberWolf at: 12/25/01 3:15:23 am
