ok... so it comes down to the last few days before i buy my new hardware. if i cut out the case/PSU and the HS/Fan i have $50 extra. can i get that stuff at fry's with that much or would i be stuck with the crappy stuff in that case? I'll be paying $11 for the HS/Fan combo and $48 for the Case/PSU combo if i get them online due to shipping. Call me cheap but i don't feel like paying $21 just to have the stuff shipped unless i really can't get equal quality stuff at fry's for cheaper than the price and shipping together. I'm about $7 dollars over my budget with everything... and i might be able to fudge the extra "just in case" near $50 i intended to leave in my account...and it may be worth it, but it definitely means i won't be getting the full version of BF1942 OR getting broadband soon... maybe after the LAN... maybe... hopefully.

SOOOO to make an already long story even longer... the question is... can i get a decent ATX case with at least a 300 watt PSU and a HS/Fan approved by AMD for the XP series for under $50 at Frys?

*edit* I intend to actually make the purchase by this Friday. If nobody will be wandering into frys before then and be kind enough to make the time to check for me... or give me a clue as to where to look... i guess i'll just fudge it... should be ok i guess */edit*

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/usirdiesal0t. ... age=EN>Sir Diesal0t at: 9/24/02 3:10:43 pm

Answer to your question, I don't think so. Unless Fry's is running a good sale on the cases then you may not be happy. Fry's is known for a great selection, and sometimes a good sale, but on average their prices are high to me.

Go to www.outpost.com, it is Fry's website. You can browse through the cases. Their good cases start around $70 to me.

I still recommend that you go purchase a case from www.directron.com or www.newegg.com. Both are pretty good.

If you want a good price, $37, on a black case look at this one on sale with an AMD approved PS. <a href="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.a ...

Or this one in beige, $35, with an AMD approved PS.
<a href="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.a ...

I just would hate for you to come down and Fry's not have anything you want at the price you can afford.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

well... everything is put together (except the case mic and phones pins and the usb case front header, which for some reason has different connectors for each individual pin instead of one thing you slide on.)

but all is not well in my little world

I was quite happy when my stuff from newegg got here on wednesday. of course i played with stuff.
yesterday, i got it to boot up through the bios and what-not, but when it started loading windows 2k pro... it got through the black screen with the bars on the bottom, but it didn't go through the screen with the image and moving colored bar. when it tries to load that screen, it hits a stop error:

{"INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE"

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,k restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your compuer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Refer to your "getting started" manual for more information on troubleshooting stop errors.}

what do they mean by "terminated"? i can get to the place where there are the options like safe mode, boot with prompt and what not, but i always hit the stop error. could it be a jumper setting? IDE cable incorrectly installed? i don't think so because the bios recognized it as the primary master .

of course i don't have a boot disk or OS CD. i can't even reach a prompt to run check disk. maybe i should go ahead and reformat anyway? (once i get a boot disk) if that will do it, i will be bored till probably, the 12th when my parents plan to come here next and bring the copy of win 2k pro (same as what is already on the HDD). I wonder if there is any other way i can manage to get el boot disk or OS CD before then short of going out and buying it? We shall see.

If that drive came out of another system with the OS on it, you're hosed, pretty much. The OS remembers the hardware it was run with last, and your new hardware doesn't match that. That's not bad in and of itself, but OS is treating the new hardware like the old and it's not reacting as expected, hence the errors. You don't have to reformat, but you do have to reinstall the OS.
(There are sometimes ways around that but it's not an easy task.)
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

If you have not already reformatted your HD, do this AFTER you have your Win2k CD:

Make sure that you have all of the drivers for your new hardware.

Put the old system back together (the one that the hard disk came from). Everything exactly as it was before.

Start it up. Press F8 when you get the chance.
Pick SAFE MODE. Make sure you are logged in as Admin.

When it finishes loading, go to the control panel.

(Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Let that load. Now open "Add/Remove Hardware".

Uninstall EVERYTHING while you are at this screen.

Close the windows and shut it down. Do NOT restart.

Take the old stuff out and put the new stuff in.

Make sure you have all your driver discs handy. Then start it up and follow the onscreen instructions when it asks for hardware drivers. It may also ask for your Win2k CD for various network items and such.

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

drivers? i suppose... i do have a driver for my gf 2 ultra. i haven't put any other hardware in there yet though, just the vid card. (to help avoid problems). you don't need drivers for a mobo, cpu, ram or case right? the floppy, the CD ROM and hard drive i got out of the same system but ok... i'll try to put it back in the old system and see if it will boot up. i do not have drivers for the cd rom or floppy or the GF2 ultra on disks. i could possibly get the gf2 ultra drivers on a zip disk. and i think i've got a cd for the zip drive... but it's a usb drive and the old system does not have usb.

could it be that windows does not understand the concept of a new mobo?

*shrug*

i guess it shouldn't hurt to try putting everythingback together...don't know for sure if i can get it the way it was... i can try but.... *hopes*

Nope. You DO need drivers for a motherboard.

Otherwise, Windows will not know how to interact with it. You should have gotten a drivers disk with your motherboard. For example, if it is a VIA chipset, you will have something called VIA-3-in-1 or VIA-4-in-1. Those two things are both drivers for motherboards.

Another thing:

If you can get the old system running. Download drivers for EVERYTHING into a directory:

C drivers\

That way you are sure to have all that you need on the harddrive, but not installed.

If you know what type of motherboard (or the chipset) that you have for the new one, then I could point you to the drivers that you will need.

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

IF you can get your old system up, or if you can boot up in Safe mode and get to the Regedit (Registry Editor), then follow my directions from here:

<a href="http://pub141.ezboard.com/fxmenclantech ...

It works VERY well when moving a hard drive from one system to a new one.

And yes, all motherboards require drivers also.

Good luck!

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

well... i hooked the HDD back into the old system and it boots to the logon screen. i can't seem to get around it. can't just log on as a new user. no generic password. befuddled i am. assuming i can actually get to the dos prompt SOME how... an enigmatic source advised me to try to go to dos and navigate through and delete the user files. i'm not sure where to find them...or if i will need to execute the new user function dealy-bob. I should be able to find drivers for the mobo relatively easy, but it's figureing out how to implant them, when and where. in the case that i will indeed need to reinstall the OS (when i have the disk) i will need some guidance as to where to go to reformat, and how to install from there on. much thanx for all the help guys

*looks for drivers for ECS K7S5A mobo*
