question... if someone were to make a run to fry's... and i were to go with them....do they sell cases + power supply? i'm just wondering if i could save on shipping. if they do carry them, what kind of prices could i be expecting. otherwise it looks like i'll be picking up a decent (hope) one with a 300 watt powersupply from newegg for $48 (including shipping). i think the brand was 'prosource' or some such. i liked the comet model.

Yeah, at Fry's, you can get anything an everything for your PC. Warhawk built one primarily from parts at Fry's last year, and then Ice shipped it home.

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!

If both Ice and I and possibly others are bringing stuffage to the LAN for sale, you're likely to get a much better price than Fry's or even online.

Fry's prices are reasonable on some things and high on others. Cases are on the upper side of reasonable (well, you're not paying shipping), RAM is decent, CPUs are high, MB depends on the deal of the week, etc.

Oh, and we ALWAYS end up making a field trip to Fry's. One or two more than originally intended, usually.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.s ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 9/17/02 7:05:25 am

If you can...look at the RETAIL version of any processor...they may be only $10 more but come with the fan and heatsink...along with a 3 year warranty versus a 30-90 day OEM warranty. Would be worth it.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Yup, quite often the factory sink is as good or better than a $30 aftermarket sink.

Fry's has some selection of sinks. They've been pushing the Volcano 5 for a while, which is underpowered for the current high-end stuff. They have chipset sinks, vga sinks, etc.

And if you're into modding, they have some stuff for that. In their automotive department they have glow wire, cold cathodes, etc. They have Enermax clear/lit/adjustable speed fans, for example. Dual-fan power supplies. And so on....
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

newegg is pushing a volcano 5 combination thing that (as i recall) comes with said fan and a heat sink combination, as well as a copper shim and some grease, AND for some odd reason a 56K modem? (huh?). anyway... i didn't think i wanted that. on pricewatch, what i recall seeing when i looked at "retail" versions. they said that at least the fan was supposed to be viewed as a temporary solution and that the warranty was only 15 days*shrug*, maybe that was only one place...bah... anyway... i was looking at some heat sinks and fans at newegg. some of the fans actually make less noise and push more cubic feet of air per minute than others. sometimes the info is kind of hard to read to understand if it's actually compatible with the XP 1600+ or not for a guy like me but i think the following heat sink and fan combos from <a href=http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.a ... +sink>this page are compatible.

<a href=http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp ... 3.JPG>this big one kinda looks funny, but it's cheaper... pushes more air, is quieter, and it IS ball bearing. i wonder if it's not too big to fit in my case on top of the mobo? i do believe it would cool well though.

<a href=http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp ... 6.jpg>this one is a little smaller, pushes less air, and is louder. but it is recommended by AMD and is also ball bearing, as well as being $2 cheaper (woo freakin hoo). good?

a copper shim isn't very important unless you're into overclocking right? i just want to know what's going to work well and reliably as well as FIT:P.

The shim, of whatever material, has nothing to do with overclocking or heat dissapation. Its purpose is to keep you from breaking your CPU when you apply the heatsink, and to help distribute the weight if you have an extra-heavy one.

If you've never installed an AMD heatsink, and you're not used to that sort of thing, then I wouldn't recommend you do it yourself. Way too easy to find yourself with a chipped CPU. It's really not very complicated, just requires care.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

AMD has a warranty that goes for ALL versions of CPU's. It states that they will cover the cost of repair or replacement of the CPU if it fails for a reason that does not include owner induced damage. So if you have one that is bad because they soldered something wrong, you're good to go.
The catch is that you have to use an AMD APPROVED heatsink and fan. The ones that come in the retail version are AMD approved. They have a list on their website.

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Edited by: <a href=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmengambit.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Gambit at: 7/14/02 8:16:26 pm

I bought the Coolermaster from www.newegg.com. It is AMD approved for the 1800+ so I hedged my bet with it. It is currently running around 107 degrees F. Not to shabby considering the case design.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

k , so i guess i can go with that. also... from my old system and the other old system that i recently took into possesion due to the generous donation of an enigmatic entity, i have 2 other CPU cooler fans. if i take the fans off from the heat sinks, would it be possible to use them as case vent fans since the case i'm looking at has two extra vent holes (sorta...needs some kind of modification me thinks) in the back? i don't think the extra ventilation could hurt . question is, how to get them to hold.

hang on to the cpu fans. Just get some other real case fans for $10 a piece later, or something, when you get some more cash.

Why Do I Always Die?!?!?!?!
