New Hard Drive to fix my PNG, hopefully////

Post by Subpar »

Ice, Pete and I tried every kind of jumper setting and still no go. I went ahead and bought a new drive, hoping that it would fix my problem. We still havent installed tribes, but I am getting other errors similar on the new drive.

I replaced my HD, and I am getting CRC errors when I try to unzip files with winzip or XP Compression tools. Any ideas?

And btw, it was giving me these errors before as well.

Any ideas?

Y'know, it COULD be a memory related problem. That may or may not mean that your memory needs to be replaced.

When copying data to/from the HD, your computer will usually try to use a method called DMA (direct memory access). If you have a problem with your DMA controller, which could be a motherboard and/or a driver issue, then the data isn't going to be moved correctly.

So, here's a test for you. Turn off DMA for that drive. You can do that by checking your the properties of the drive in device manager. You might also do it from your CMOS setup screens, but it's a little less obvious what you're doing in there.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

I would agree with Gambino. I am at a loss otherwise. I would like to take that machine from you for a week and go through it with a fine-tooth diagnostic comb. This is if you were willing to leave it with me.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Changed the setting on the drive to PIO and still no go. How do you upgrade a DMA Controller driver???
