We are moving (10:00 friday) to a new house. The house is kinda old, confined, and would be a pain to network with actual cable that dont hang on the corners of walls and floors. My Dad is planning to use a wireless home network in conjunction with our cable modem as the outside line. This brings me to my questions. What (if any) issues are there with wireless networking, and is there any way to have a wireless hub with RJ45 ports.

(if you cant tell, i am still trying to develop my technoligical intellect)

-SOUP-DruMax - Cage that stuwey and his shocklance....>grumble<

Don't know about the wireless HUB, since I've not seen the equipment. But I do know that with wireless networking, your signal range is about 300 feet. This means that unless you have it secured you might end up sharing bandwidth with people you don't know. It might not sound common, but it actually is pretty common around my area. I've heard that the way to get around that is to password the system...

But...I've not handled the equipment, nor spent time researching it, so I can't help much more than state what I know of it.

I think you will have a transmitter that acts like a router, then several receivers that hook up to each individual computer probably through USB or an ethernet card. If that's the case, you can set one computer up to be a gateway and hook it up to a HUB...or if you're in luck, you will be able to plug a reciever into a hub and do it that way. This is just conjecture, since I don't really know much more about the technology than how it works; I've not handled the equipment.

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

As for the RJ45 hub... I'm not sure, but I don't think you'll find RJ45 on the wireless hub itself. I would suspect that there must be a way to connect a conventional hub to the wireless hub via a crossover cable, though.

Don't know about the wireless issues, but the point that Asha brings up sounds legit. I would be concerned about security, too. Not saying that you'll be the target of anything malicous, but if you're data is floating through the air, I'm sure there's a way for someone else to capture it.

<span class=''usertitle'>
XMENPorsche[DTM]
Retired Leader - XMEN
Retired Leader - DTM
Eater of Chicken Fried Steak

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." - Wayne Gretzky

"One of the hallmarks of a disciple of Jesus Christ is that he always leaves things better than he found it." - Chip Ingram

I know there are several wireless routers, and I think Linksys is among them, that have an RJ-45 port or two onboard. I wouldn't take it for granted though, so make sure that the model you're getting has one if you want it. You can find so many of those things for equivalent prices that you should be able to get one with the features you want without paying extra.

Definitely password the system. And monitor access attempts, if you can.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.
