Idiot Subpar is once again seeking help of the XMEN

Post by Subpar »

Seeing as you guys/gals are some of the more knowledgeable people I know, I need some help.

About 1 1/2 ago my computer would just freeze. This was after some T2 problems where I would UE everytime I logged in, and I mean everytime (within seconds). I was running windows 98 se at the time, got T@ working (by deleting the support.vl2 file). The computer, however, continued its freezing fetish, ever since.

I opted to re format with a clean XP install. And things where good for a few weeks. After working out my T2 mouse bugs I was pleased. I had not yet installed anything other than T2, because I didnt think the problem was resolved (and I have a laptop for the other stuff).

As one could suspect, the problem has again manifested itself. At this point all I have done for the past few weeks is throw parts at it. Here is what I have done.

1. Video Card Upgrade- Upgraded Video Card to Gforce 2 64 MG, from ATI all in wonder Radeon (note I never used to play video games until T2). Didnt fix the problem.

2. Upgraded CDROM to DVD ROM. (most of the freezing occured while the CD was spinning. However, it started freezing doing normal applications after).

3. I purchased a Muskin 512 MB DDR Ram when I rebuilt my PC in October, but the Ram was suspect, so I added another 512MB of Mushkin, still freezes. (maybe I should remove the old one?)

4. Case. My old case was just that, OLD. It had a 150 watt power supply, and I thought maybe that was the culprit. I purchased an Fullsize Antec tower with a 400watt powersupply (I copied from Alienware Gamers PC usizing similar stuff). Put everything in there, its gotten better, but it still freezes.

My Mobo is a Soyo Dragon, with an AMD 1.4 Tbird chip. I have a 60gig (new) Maxtor drive and a new 20 Gig Western digital drive.

I dont know what else today. I was at a friends house trying to recreate the problem, but couldnt, and sure enough, last night as soon as I got home, BAMM, FREEZES!!! *sigh*

I am beggining to think its something with my house. I ran an extension cord from my bedroom (on the opposite end of the house) to my office to try and get a different source of power. My office shares a wall with the garage (washer and dryer, hot water heater,) and the kitchen (refrigerator and microwave) are right around the corner. Still no go. I didnt think computers could be so figity, but, they are *sigh*.

Any ideas?????? Please help me cause I am an idiot!!!!!!

A few things come to mind.

1. Temp of the CPU, is it too hot?

2. Spyware, have you checked to see if you have any spyware on your system? Tribes HATES spyware. Will freeze or UE out on you consistently. Go to www.lavasoft.de and get Adware, run it and have it kill/delete any spyware on your system.

3. Do you have the latest video drivers for your vid card? Go to www.nvidia.com to see if you have the latest ones.

Worst case scenario you bring it over to Gambits house off Matlock Rd and we rip into it. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

OK, the freezing isnt just with Tribes, last night it foze when I was playing a DVD. This morning I checked to see it stayed up all night, nope, froze on the screen saver.

I have removed all the ad stuff using add aware.

I dont think the CPU is too hot. The new case has way better ventalation, but I can add another fan. (it already has 2).

Just might take you up that offer. Worse case scenario, is I buy a new mobo and chip, then everything is new. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /devil.gif ALT=":evil">

Mwahaha! Bring it to my lab. I like taking things apart... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /devil.gif ALT=":evil">

If you couldn't reproduce it when taking the system to your friend's house (if I read that right) it may be the power. You could try a line contitioner. I have one that Ice picked up for me and it reports an undervoltage most of the time. Newer motherboards have 3- and 4-phase power circuitry that helps stabilize power fluctuations.

To test the temp, take the cover off while you're testing. That'll at least keep the case temp down. Programs such as motherboard monitor can keep an eye on that temp for you, too. Of course, if your problem is electrical interference (say you live near high-tension lines or someone's playing with a Tesla coil in the next room) then removing the case should make it worse.

If you're running an AMD/Via system, make sure you've got the latest patches for the OS.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

I have the latest video drivers and bios upgrades. I will try and get motherboard monitor tonight, and will post my temp specs.

On my old case, i dint have the cover on since I installed XP.

I dont know anything about a line conditioner. You will have to explain that more. What about a UPS? I might be able to get my hands on one here at work, would that help, or drain more power?

Most UPS's have a line conditioner built in, I think.

If you have access to an oscilloscope, you can check the quality of your line. You'll have to make sure that you are working with one that is set for 120V and can take a current of 30 Amps. Most that I have seen can do that, but I've only seen and used them at school. When you look at the waveform on the screen, it should be fairly clean looking. Not many jagged edges, and the frequency should be about 60 Hz (though it can vary from 50Hz to 70Hz).

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Most inexpensive home UPS systems do NOT have a line conditioner built in. They run wall current until it falls out of spec, and then tries to switch over to battery fast enough to keep the equipment up. But a UPS is sure better than nothing.

Supbar, a line conditioner is there to turn your normal wall current into a nice smooth waveform like Asha was saying. It's much easier on your equipment.
Most computer failure, once the system is running, is due to bad power. Spikes, surges, brownouts, etc. At least it used to be; these days I'm wondering how quickly heat will replace it. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

You live near an airport, and run your computer with the case off?

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

I dont live that close to the aiport. Grand Prairie is like 12 miles from the airport.

OK, here is the latest:

-tried different version of video drivers
-changed some jumper setting on my drives

It was acting up at my friends house last night, so that makes me feel a little better. We got it stable at his place, but when I turned it on at home, it kept shutting itself off. It only froze in windows once.

I plan on using a UPS from work to see if this helps any. Dont know.

I kept resetting it and poweringing it on and off, and I finally got the thing to stay on. I played a offline tribes deathmatch for like an hour. I left it on all night and this morning when I got up, the PC was still on. Crazy. I know problems just dont fix themselves, so I would expect to see it again.

Here is my next plan of action:

Start with only the C:. i will then add each drive seperatley over the next couple of days. I hope to see if there is some type of configuration error.

If I cant find anything, I will do another reformat. Maybe it is a windows problem. I didnt know that XP had a blue screen of death, but I have seen it.

If I cant get it working, then I might take you up on the offer to have surgery in your "lab".

Anyway, I'll keep you informed. If you have any suggestions, just add.

Sub...you are more than welcome to come by. We are having a garage sale, so while the women-folk sell all my old underwear, etc., Hammer, I, Rooster, and Firebird are going to be doing the computer stuff...plus a few drinks by the cement pond. Let me know and I will send you a map.
