Help?

Post by Atheist »

Hey all,

To put it all shortly, I have a mobo and a cpu combo that doesn't work. I can't figure out which one. I *suspect* that the mobo is the culprit because when I try to boot up, the fan spins, the harddrives spin, and the lights come up buuuut nothing on screen. In fact, the power LED on my screen flashes indicating that there is no signal going to the screen. Curious.

I have no reason to believe that the CPU is damaged and I think the problem is with the mobo because when I was putting the heatsink on the CPU I slipped and hit the board. Now I didn't think this would do anything (still don't even know if that's what the problem is) but this computer won't load up and it's pissing me off.

Do you guys know how to figure out if a cpu is good or not without having to swap it into another system (and yes I did smell it and it doesn't smell like burned electronics, although the mobo kind of does).

Help!!

Do you have your mobo configured properly?

On some motherboards there is a jumper that has to be set to let the MB distinguish between Thunderbird and Palomino cores. For mine, it won't work if you don't have the proper one selected.

Don't know how to test a MB or CPU without some additional equipment. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

As far as I can tell, I have all the jumpers set up properly.

That's not a problem. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

is your mobo grounding out on the case?
and if the fans come up then, my guess is it's the CPU.

THZ*Jester[DTM]
Cerberus of The Hounds of Zeus
Professional Hitman for The XMEN
Evil App Admin for the Dragon Talon Mercenaries
Battle Ground Radio

AFAIK, in that situation, there's not a good way to tell without swapping one or the other. Iceman, Hammer and I wrestled with one for many hours not too long ago. Went through multiple variations of both parts - more than one was bad. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

I would guess the CPU. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Oh...and try another vid card just to isolate that out. Yeah, if you try and boot up without the vidcard at all, the mobo should shriek like a baby.

Since you also mentioned the heatsink colliding with the board, I'd whip out a magnifying glass and see if any of the metal traces are scratched or broken on the board... a broken trace'll kill one for sure.

Member: DTM, XMEN
Professional Tank Driver
Card-carrying Base-Cracker
Ugly Son-Of-A-Gun

Bug's Tank Bumper Sticker:
"If you can read this, you're already street pizza."

Well, the guy I got the mobo from is going to send me a new one. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> Now if it's the CPU, I'm gonna have to break my foot off in somebody's ass.

It's not the video card, I'm using that same vid card in this system with no problems.

Alright.. it's not the mobo. I just got a replacement and I still get the same problem.

It must be the CPU and I must be an idiot. Tell me something... when you put Arctic Ice 3 and it gets on the bridges on the top of the chip, will that short the chip out?

If that's the case that explains why my new system doesn't work.

*sighs*

Yep, happened to me. You can try using rubbing alcohol to clean them, but it may be too late. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

It depends on which bridges, I think.

Also, you gotta watch the heatsink and how it relates to the RAM. I have the same board, and have a slight concern about my heatsink and hoses getting close to the RAM chips. Also, gotta watch those damn capacitors on the side! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:">

I like the RAID option on the board though. It's nice. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Yeah...that Raid is nice....and it helps keep the roach population down in his case. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!
