Sirus needs a new mouse!

Post by RedSirus »

I'm starting to get 'tennis elbow' from my mouse, not a good sign, and I'm considering making the leap to trackball. Now, I've just got one problem...
I'm left handed.

Given that the trackball is more finger based than hand based, I *might* be open to getting a right handed trackball - maybe I can pick it up pretty quickly. So here are my problems:

Left handed:
No one makes left handed trackballs. The ambidextrous trackballs have absolutely no frills. While I could get a right-handed ergonomic trackball with the two things I want in a mouse: optical and a scrolling wheel; I can't seem to find a mousewheel in an ambidextrous model, they're all included in the right-handed-only models. I consider a mousewheel paramount (as much, if not slightly more than optical).
( e.g. <a href="http://www.logitech.com/cf/products/pro ... )

Right handed:
I'm not sure how easy it'll be to pick up, and if so, how gaming'll be. Has anyone played FPSes (Tribes2 in particular) with a trackball mouse? How is it?
If I start using a trackball in my right hand, my left hand will be the one on the keyboard, and I'll have to throw out the control scheme I've been using since I first got Tribes1 and have used for every game since then.

I think my best option is looking for a left handed trackball if it'd be useful for gaming (so that I can keep my setup), and a right handed mouse if trackballs aren't that good on it (a lot of the strain on my arm is coming from normal surfing, application using, and use of painting programs, so my arms would get a break during normal windows and I could afford to use a normal mouse for T2).

Any suggestions, and any ideas on a good left-handed friendly trackball? Here's my best find so far:
<a href="http://www.logitech.com/cf/products/pro ...
It's ambidextrous and optical, but man, I want a mousewheel. I'm ALSO looking at a new keyboard, perhaps I can get my wheel fix there.......

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ... >Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uredsirus.showP ... s at: 5/12/02 12:35:58 pm

You could get a Microsoft Office Keyboard. They have a scrolling wheel on the left side, and they have al kinds of other cool butons on there too. (And, is't a normal style keyboard, not those ugly, uncomfortable split ones.) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Why Do I always Die?!?!

That's a SWEET looking keyboard!

I think that's the one I'm going to get, if I decide on an ambi-trackball-new-keyboard setup. Which is likely.
Thanks, Spinning!

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ...

Sirus, I used to change controllers every so often because of pain in elbow & wrist. I'd use a mouse at home for gaming, and at work I used trackballs, touchpads, all kinds of stuff.

Then I just started using a mouse in my LEFT hand (since I'm right handed) at work. I don't need the same level of control to navigate a word document or java program as I do to fire a spinfusor, so it's not a big deal. So you might try that - use a controller in your right hand for regular stuff, and left hand when your gaming.
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

Sirus has a new mouse!

Thanks for the idea, Gambit, about swapping hands to keep my left arm happy, but that quickly started causing my right hand agony (I've got tendonitis in there, from an inrelated problem).
I decided on a right handed ergonomic trackball (5 buttons, Microsoft - the store didn't have the Logitech one I was looking at) plus, if it doesn't work, I can trade it in within 30 days.

Here's hoping this works.

<img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/avatars/t2red.g ... >
RedSirus@

Dragon Talon Mercenary > <a href=http://server2.ezboard.com/bdragontalon ... >
DTM Community > <a href=http://pub18.ezboard.com/fdtmonlinecomm ... s>RedSirus' Reviews

Brainwashed Fishmonger > Forum ...
