Memory Question

Post by XMEN Iceman »

I am going to update Roosters RAM setup.

Right now he has an ECS motherboard that supports both SDRAM and DDRAM. He currently have 256meg of SDRAM. But with memory prices plummeting would it be better to purchase another 256meg of SDRAM for a total of 512, or would it be better to go to 256meg of DDR? I realize that more RAM is good, but is the speed advantage worth it for DDR? I am not quite sure.

Thanks for your input.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmeniceman.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Iceman at: 5/10/02 1:17:08 pm

Personally, I would opt for the DDR. the doubling in the Bus speed, would make up for that *puny* amount of RAM. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> But seriously, 256Mb of RAM is plenty. I run Win XP Pro, and idling, It uses 91Mb of RAM or so. Running T2, and Teamspeak, puts me around 175-200Mb. Not too bad, if ya ask me. (But what would I know, I have 1GB of SDRAM.)

Why Do I always Die?!?!

I would have to agree with SH on this. I wasn't sure at first, but then he mentioned how much RAM is used for apps. DDR is the way to go.

<left>Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
Have a Nice Day!

"Politics, war, martial arts;
these are tools to bend the
universe to your will."</left>

Performance gain on DDR isn't really that much - the numbers don't translate into real-world experience. If you can find somewhere to sell/use the SDR, that's great, get the DDR. If not, personally I'd either expand the SDR total or just wait for the next upgrade.

Note that my recommendation is the conservative cost/return ratio. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> "What am I buying with my bucks?"
XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Life is complex; it consists of real and imaginary parts.

What O/S is he running, Putz? I don't care what anyone says - go beyond 256Mb on a Win9x system and you're just not going to realize much of a difference. If he's running an NT based O/S (Win2k or XP), I think the 512 would be the better way to go.

<span class=''usertitle'>
XMENPorsche[DTM]
Semi-retired Leader of the XMEN
Leader - Dragon Talon Mercenaries
Citizen of New Fenecia
Eater of Chicken Fried Steak

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." - Wayne Gretzky

"One of the hallmarks of a disciple of Christ is that he always leaves things better than he found it." - Chip Ingram

Since prices on memory dropped this week I went ahead and got Rooster a 256meg DDR memory chip. Was like $48 after shipping. That should work fine for him. Part of the reason that I did not buy more SDR is that his current SDR is only PC100 (all I had at the time) and I cannot take his 1.2ghz processor beyond 900mhz with it. So I did not want to buy another SDR chip. This will get him another 300mhz in processor speed, by me moving it up to where it should be, and plus a slight throughput advantage of being DDR.

It should arrive Tuesday next week.

Thanks guys for the input.

<embed align="left" src="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="217" height="166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ...

XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader of the Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenaries teamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatar for links - no, not sausage links!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub3.ezboard.com/uxmeniceman.sho ... ge=EN>XMEN Iceman at: 5/16/02 10:26:01 pm
