Is this possible?

Post by Jester DTM »

So after I install XP I noticed that my CPU is running 3 Degrees C cooler. Is that becuase is has to work less? I went from 52/3 on average to 48/9 now. <p><table border="2" bordercolor="#420042" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><head><link REL=STYLESHEET HREF="http://www.thzclan.com/jester/jessig.css" TYPE="text/css"></head><tr><td><a href="http://www.thzclan.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.thzclan.com/jester/THZjester1a.jpg" width="240" height="240" border="0"></a></td><td><a href="http://www.thzclan.com/cam" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.thzclan.com/jester/cam/ccam.jpg" width="320" height="240" border="0"></a></td></tr><tr><td colspan="2" align="center" bgcolor="#000000" id="jessig"><a href="mailto:jester@thzclan.com">THZ*Jester[DTM]</a><br>Cerberus of <a href="http://www.thzclan.com" target="_blank">The Hounds of Zeus</a><br>Professional Hitman for <a href="http://www.xmenclan.org" target="_blank">The XMEN</a><br>Evil App Admin for the <a href="http://www.dragontalonmercs.com" target="_blank">Dragon Talon Mercenaries</a></td></tr></table></p><i></i>

I think so... Mine has been running cooler since I upgraded to WinXP, down to around 35 degrees.... (Celsius of course..)<br> <p><map name="SHMAP"><area href="http://xmenclan.org" target="_blank" shape="rect" coords="169, 72, 193, 143"><area href="http://dragontalonmercs.com" target="_blank" shape="rect" coords="0, 78, 25, 141"><area href="http://pub1.ezboard.com/uspinninghat.sh ... anguage=EN" target="_blank" shape="rect" coords="22, 3, 172, 30"></map><img border="0" src="http://www.xmenclan.org/sh3d2.gif" usemap="#SHMAP" width="194" height="144"> <br><a href="http://www.robohouse.com/myrobot"><img src="http://www.robohouse.com/myrobot/maximillian.gif" border=0 alt="Click here to find out what robot you really are"></a></p><i></i>

Just a theory...maybe the trimmed and improved operating system doesn't need as many instruction sets to perform the same amount of work? <p><table border="0"><tr><td><EMBED align=leftsrc="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu=falsequality=high bgcolor=#000000 WIDTH=217 HEIGHT=166TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash"PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ... d><td>XMEN Iceman [DTM]<br>Founder and Leader ofthe Base Tribes XMEN Clan<br>Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenariesteamplayers Guild<br>Citizen of New Fenecia<br><br> "You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman<br><br> - click on avatarfor links - no, not sausage links!</td></tr></table><br></p><i></i>

Possibly a more efficient idle process. That's the task that takes the most time - check your process monitor.<br><br>On the other hand, could the time of year/weather have something to do with it? <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> <p><img height=150 width=115 src=http://www.xmenclan.org/xmengambit.gif border=0 align=left>XMEN member<br>Card-carrying DTM<br>OKL Fish-napper<br><br><br>Though a program be but three lines long,<br> someday it will have to be maintained.<br> <i>- The Tao of Programming</i><br>Here, let me deal you in...</p><i></i>

ok what exactly is an idle process? I know its what the computer does when its idle, but why couldn't it just do nothing? <p><A HREF=mailto:sirscorch@excite.com ></A> <OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://active.macromedia.com/flash2/cab ... on=4,0,0,0" ID=Scorch WIDTH=440 HEIGHT=320> <PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="http://www.angelfire.com/games/scorchdtm/Scorch.swf"> <PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high> <PARAM NAME=bgcolor VALUE=#000000> <EMBED src="Scorch.swf" quality=high bgcolor=#000000 WIDTH=440 HEIGHT=320 TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash" PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ... </p><i></i>

One of the things it has to do is check for input. If it was doing nothing, it'd be locked up. <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> (No, I haven't forgotten about hardware interrupts.)<br><br>The CPU is always executing instructions. Sometimes they are NOPs (No OPeration). NOPs are the closest thing to nothing that the CPU can do unless you want to slow the clock down, like some laptops. In which case they're still executing, just slower.<br><br>Now the OS is running on the CPU, and it's got stuff it's always doing. Cutsie mouse animations, sorting through available memory & caches to see what it can dump or rearrange, temperature monitors, USB monitors, ethernet monitors, all kinds of stuff. What I meant by having a more efficient idle process was that the OS is more efficient about these housekeeping tasks, and able to feed more NOPs to the CPU, thereby consuming less power and generating less heat. <br><br>Not that I KNOW XP is more efficient, I'm just guessing that this could be the case.<br><br><br><br> <p><img height=150 width=115 src=http://www.xmenclan.org/xmengambit.gif border=0 align=left>XMEN member<br>Card-carrying DTM<br>OKL Fish-napper<br><br><br>Though a program be but three lines long,<br> someday it will have to be maintained.<br> <i>- The Tao of Programming</i><br>Here, let me deal you in...</p><i></i>
