What are some good harddrives?

Post by Jester DTM »

Gryphon is hooking me up with a copy of XP and I am going to get a second slave hardrive for it. I saw that Western Digital is rated pretty decent, and I can get 40gig for 93 dollars. I also hear bad things about MAXTOR so whasuup?
<img src="http://www.thzclan.com/public_html/jest ... img>
THZ*Jester[DTM]
Cerberus of The Hounds of Zeus
Professional Hitman for The XMEN
Evil App Admin for the Dragon Talon Mercenaries
HTML Comments are not allowed

Everyone makes a bad batch of drives once in a while. IBM had one recently, but I'd still buy an IBM drive if I was shopping now. Generally quite good.
I had a dud Maxtor once, but I've had others since, with no problems.
Fujitsu drives are often cheaper because they've skimped on the buffer. Had one like that, too. Otherwise was fine.
I had an NEC, and it was the NOISIEST drive I've ever owned. I think it eventually failed on me, too, which is unusual for me. I have avoided them since.
My experiences with Western Dig drives are about on par with my Maxtor ones.

Things to look for in a drive: RPM (5400, 7200, 10K?), buffer size, access time, MTBF, heat and noise generated. The higher the RPM, the more heat and noise you'll get, but with a better throughput and a little better (unnoticable) access time. My current 7200 RPM drive runs pretty warm; most 10k's require their own fans.

All other things being equal, I'd probably choose an IBM or Quantum drive.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long,
someday it will have to be maintained.
- The Tao of Programming
Here, let me deal you in...

I can't speak about the other drives but I have had a couple of Maxtor drives over the years and have never had a single hitch with either of them. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

=oV= - Omnino Victoria: Together Victorious
DTM - Dragon Talon Mercenaries: A guild dedicated to honourable gaming

Ahhh, just watch out for the IBM 75XP (or GXP, I can't quite remember the exact name). There's a class-action lawsuit against IBM for the failure of those drives. From what I hear, all the other IBM drives are just fine.

BTW, Maxtor bought Quantum a while back. Personally, I've had good experience wth my Maxtors, but I have had a dud drive or two over the years (not just from Maxtor).

Member: DTM, XMEN, SeXy
The Drunken ArtilleryBug!
"Roj, target is *hic* DAWWWG-meat!"

I am running an IBM 60XP 40Gig 7200rpm drive. Quietest drive I have ever had. Can't even hear it run.

I have owned only IBM drives for the last 3 years. Not one failure. Hammer and my wife also have the 15gig IBM drives. No issues.

I like Maxtors also. But IBM's are my favorite. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

<EMBED align=leftsrc="http://www.thzclan.com/avatars/ezice.swf" menu=falsequality=high bgcolor=#000000 WIDTH=217 HEIGHT=166TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash"PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/dow ... d>
XMEN Iceman [DTM]
Founder and Leader ofthe Base Tribes XMEN Clan
Proud member of the Dragon Talon Mercenariesteamplayers Guild
Citizen of New Fenecia

"You weren't much of a challenge" - T2 bot after killing Iceman

- click on avatarfor links - no, not sausage links!

I've only owned IBM and WD drives. I've had good experiences with both, but had one 30 GB WD drive fail, horribly.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Citizen of New Fenecia
Dragon Talon Mercenary
Member of the XMEN
I'm too SeXy
Have a Nice Day!

Had an 80Mb Maxtor fail on me back in '91, but recently bought a 40Gb Maxtor unit that is quiet, stable, and reliable.

I've seen a BUNCH of IBM Travelstar drives die in laptops, but don't know much about their Deskstar series. My suggestion to you would be to read through www.stor ... . They have some excellent reviews and will probably be able to tell you what you need to know.

XMENPorsche[DTM]
Semi-retired Leader of the XMEN
Co-Leader - Dragon Talon Mercenaries
Citizen of New Fenecia
Eater of Chicken Fried Steak

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." - Wayne Gretzky

"Stupidity is like nuclear power; it can be used for good or evil... and you don't want to get any on you." - Dilbert
