I debated with myself long and hard about actually showing what went on over on the lee side of that little hill, Cgynus. Then I remembered all those Hitchcock episodes I watched as a kid and figured it would be better to leave a few hints to steer the reader's imagination. That scene was the equivalent of shadows on the wall, so to speak.

It's a kind of character device, really--I want ToB-Bug to appear cold, practical, and ruthless at this stage of the story, but I don't want him to seem like a sadist. To him, sadism is quite useless--it's not efficient, and efficiency is one of ToB-Bug's hallmarks. Remember, he didn't kill Mortok out of mercy, but out of practicality.

Efficiency equals joy and all that, y'dig?

Kicken guy. I absolutly love it.
One question though. Didn't Bugs hive/queen die in a BE attack? So would she not be one of the fifteen queens to die by the Bioderms or was that a different storyline? Not being critical just slightly confused.

Bug's mother, Dath, is currently quite dead. Dath bought it from the BE--remember Michael Khentor from Due Process? Yep, he's the man responsible for her death and for Bug's fifty-year quest of vengeance.

Tath, Dath's daughter, is the one that kicked Bug out after Dath bought it. Tath died in the BioDerm assault on all the hives.

Now, the whole thing with Dath talking to Bug took place in the Hive-Mind. If you've read Dune, think of the Bene Gesserit collective consciousness of ancestors and you'll have the gist of the Hive-Mind. Unlike the BG collective, though, the Hive-Mind requires a physical host in which to reside. Thus the thing in Bug's chest--one of Dath's daughters that she halted the growth process on and made into a Hive-Mind receptacle. (Horrible process for a Queen, hence Dath's anguish about doing it. For us humans, it would be akin to giving up your healthy but unborn kid for stem-cell research.)

Now, you might be thinking "But there's a ready-to-go Queen's egg somewhere with the BioDerms! Why can't it hold the Hive-Mind?" The answer is that it isn't ready yet--each new Queen has to be 'imprinted' in a manner of speaking so that they can tap in. It's a kind of security measure--the Queens are, by and large, an extremely paranoid lot, hence the Great Civil War.

Therefore, Bug needs to take this lot of unruly Queens in his chest to the progenitor egg that the BioDerms stole and imprint the Hive-Mind onto it.

*edit*

If you're wondering... yes, Bug is at the moment a 'King' of sorts.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... bug>Ambush Bug at: 11/23/03 4:23 am
