"Dark Legion" - Ch. 4

Post by Asha man »

Hee hee. Here it is. Comments and crticism is much appreciated.

---------------

CHAPTER 4:

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Jon stood there for a moment, plasma gun at the ready. Jon was wondering what to do next, when the figure spoke.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “I know this looks odd, but please, let me explain.”, said a male voice.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “You can explain it after taking off your helmet. If you do not do as I say, I will see how long it takes plasma to melt your armor. I have seen it before, so I can tell you it will only take a few seconds. Maybe your armor is different?”, said Jon with a cold smile. He had sent a message to the innkeeper to come to his room armed. Jon was not going to tangle with an armored person in quarters this close without some sort of backup.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “I will do as you say. I submit.”, said the figure as its hand went slowly to its helmet.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Jon tensed his grip on the plasma gun as the figure’s hands moved. He was ready for anything. Except for what happened next.
The innkeeper opened the door, startling the armored figure in front of Jon. The figure’s sudden, startled movement startled Jon and he squeezed off a round of plasma that hit the figure on the right knee. The armored figure screamed in a shockingly female voice as the helmet went flying across the room.
“You shot me! I did exactly what you told me to!”, screamed the figure in a female voice.
“Sorry, Jon. I didn’t mean to startle you.”, said the innkeeper. “You want me to call security?”
“No, Simon. Just cover me.”, said Jon as he handed his plasma gun to the innkeeper.
Jon moved toward the figure. He noticed that the person had no visible weapons. A person always carries a weapon; the hands, feet, hips, and so on.
“Are you alright? Did the plasma penetrate too deeply?”, queried Jon. “I am sorry about that, but you did startle me.” Jon kept one hand tensed for a strike to the opponent’s throat, the other was reaching toward the figure.
“I am still functional. My armor absorbed the blast.”, said the figure. Again, it was a female voice, though not one that he had heard before.
“Please take off your armor.”, Jon trailed off as he saw that the figure was indeed a woman, though one in male armor. “Just so that we are on even terms.”
The woman slowly took off her armor. She was older than Jon was, though he couldn’t say how old. She had well toned muscles, and a slim build. She also had dark hair that was bound into a tight knot or ball at the back of her head. The woman also had dark eyes that matched the color of her hair. The woman had a fierce look to her that came from her sharp facial features. She looked beaten.
It’s probably a façade to lull Simon and myself into complacency, then she would strike and kill us both., thought Jon as he observed the woman’s features.
Jon was surprised that she could operate in the armor that she wore with such a small body. A sudden thought brought a question to Jon’s lips.
“You are a female, wearing male armor, with a cloaking device, AND you are in my room. I presume you were watching me. Why?”, said Jon.
“I can not say anything more than what you have been instructed to do.”, the woman said with a look towards Simon, the innkeeper. “There is no way that I will tell you more than that.”
I can’t sit here and deal with this. I have a class to lecture, and now is not the time to interrogate., thought Jon.
“Simon, do you have a metal storage locker underground?”, asked Jon turning towards his old friend.
“Yes, Jon, I do.”, said Simon. “I’ll go grab something to tie her up.”
“Thanks, Simon. That is exactly what I was thinking.”, said Jon.

Jon and Simon quickly tied the woman up and put her inside a metal locker. The metal locker was set into one of the walls at the end of the hallway outside Jon’s room. The woman struggled some, but was easily overpowered by two men; one of which was wearing hoplite armor.
“Simon, make sure that the entrances to this place are locked at all times. Wait until I get back, then we will decide what to do. She is strong. Don’t let her apparent weakness lull you into being soft on her.”, said Jon.
“I will probably close down for the day. I will be waiting for you when you return.”, said Simon.
Jon walked outside at a quick pace, waving to Simon as he left the inn. He was going to be late if he did not hurry.

Jon got to the lecture building in plenty of time. He had run as fast as he could once he got outside his inn. He had a quarter of an hour to spare when he arrived. Just enough time to clean the dust off of his armor. He had to be presentable to the students. He was a role model today.
The building that was Jon’s destination was a new building. Jon did not know how new the building was, but he knew that it had been built after Jon had graduated and left the school. Jon looked for the nearest place to clean his armor.
After cleaning himself, Jon walked to the room where he was going to give his lecture. The route he took was a sort of rear entrance to the lecture hall that ended to the left of the platform where Jon was going to talk from. As Jon walked into the room to take a seat behind the speaking platform, he looked at the room.
The lecture hall was in the shape of a diamond, much longer than it was wide. The room was easily 150 meters long and 50 meters wide. The room looked larger as Jon walked further into it. Jon turned toward the corner where the speaking platform, and his seat, was located. It was at the corner that was at the widest part of the room. Arrayed around the speaking platform were several hundred perhaps a thousand seats for the audience. This audience was still filing in through several doors in the opposite walls. Jon looked at the students looking at him as he sat down.
“Hello, Jon. Glad that you could make it.”, said a smiling dean.
“I’m glad as well. I am going to give a little class on the Raamsteiden engagement. It should be interesting.”, said Jon.
“Good. Good.”, said the dean. “Another minute or two for the final students to walk in. Then we will be ready.”
Cool. Calm. Ice., thought Jon. The mantra always had helped in the past. Jon was nervous for some reason. He felt like he was being watched. He was being watched, but this feeling was more like someone was intensely scrutinizing every minute detail of his form. Jon could not tell why he was feeling this way. There were only students in the room. Then Jon thought about the cloaked figure that he found in his room that morning.
“Do you have any knowledge of cloaking devices?”, asked Jon.
“Not really. Other than that they are supposed to twist light around the field that they generate, while letting some light twist inward. They tend to heat up because of that inward twisted light, or so I hear. If you didn’t twist that light inward, then you would not be able to see what is outside of your cloaking field. Hmm…I don’t know how to make one, if that is what you are asking.”, replied the dean. “Why do you ask?”
“Nothing. Just a stray thought. I need to concentrate. The students are almost done filing in.”, said Jon.

The dean rose to introduce Jon as the last student was finished filing in. The room was completely silent as the dean got to the speaking area of the platform. His voice was loud and crisp as he introduced Jon to the class. “Students, today we find ourselves being addressed by perhaps the best that our institution has produced. I present to you, Jon “Impactus” Gerr. Jon stood as the dean said his name and walked toward the speaking area. As he looked out at the audience, waiting attentively for him, Jon noticed a slight shimmering in the rear of the audience.

----------------

I realize that it may look at bit rough.
