Autocross Pictures...Beware! LOTS of pictures!

Non-'puter stuff. Photography, hot rods, or tropical fish for example

Autocross Pictures...Beware! LOTS of pictures!

Post by XMEN Diamond Katana »

A collection of pictures that I took a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I screwed up and not many from the batch that I took were very sharp.

The last one is my friend in the "Grocery Getter." He actually got first in his class (of three cars)! :P

Just by looking at the photos, I'd have to say the yellow and Blue 'Vettes must have been the most competitive. They looked to hold the road so much better, and not transfer so much weight to the outside corner of the car in a turn. The Miatas and Mustangs look to be on the ragged edge of tire performance, but still holding their own. Autocross is a neat sport, where speed and control are more important than having to pass cars and bee too competitive or worry about the guy next to you wrecking a $50,000 investment. If you wreck, it's your own fault. ;)

Nice shots all in all, but I think some shots from a short straight would look pretty cool to give more sense of the confines of the track. Seeing the cars in the corners is cool, but sometimes that straight on shot is really neat.

Some very nice images. Great reminders of why I like the current generation 'Vette so much more than the previous one. It just looks so darn much better.

I don't know what kind of camera you're using, but if you have manual control over your shutter/aperture (ala DSLR) you might want to try some speed shots. Instead of shooting with a shutter speed fast enough to freeze action go with something slower and pan with your subject. It takes some practice but when done correctly it gives the image a nice sense of speed. See my image below for an example. Normally I shoot MX at somewhere around 1/1250 shutter speed (or faster). In this shot I slowed it down to 1/80 and closed my aperture to about f/18 to keep from blowing out the image.

Thanks. Unfortunately there's a limitation from where I can take pictures and the only decent straight-away on the course was on the opposite side of the track from where the spectators were allowed.

Porsche, I'm using the same camera as BR, the Rebel XT. I'm going back up tomorrow for some more pictures, so I'll try some speeds shots then and see how they turn out.

I personally love the late 60's and 70's body styles for the 'vette. Though I definitely prefer the current generation 'vette over the 80's body style. I think they really messed up with most 80's cars. :P

Porsche, I just had a completely unrelated thought: You were saying in another post about doing an OOB of motocross from the side and how you'd have to cut around all the spokes. Well, you wouldn't if you used the above shot, for example. :)

I've considered using a speed shot, but when you look at the image full size you may not see spoke detail, but that area does have kind of a silverish tint. Eliminating it would look kinda funky.

I might play with it anyway just to see what happens.
