Why it's so hard to make a good game these days

Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

Why it's so hard to make a good game these days

Great article! It's an overview of the obstacles faced by people trying to build today's (and tomorrow's) games, from scope of work down to the 3d-algorithms and collision testing.

very nice article. it breaks it down very well and I liked the graphs.

to put another opinion in, I would say that the reason 'good games' are not coming out much anymore (at least not 'good' to us..) has to do more with the community of players who play the game.

Take the Tribes 1/2 Community for instance.
(i'm talking about tribes 1 btw.... t2 is nothing like t1 for the reasons below)

We started playing tribes. Not the best graphics, but they were good enough to keep people playing. The graphics run fast, the game is fast paced, and, overall, the game is SIMPLE (something that alot of games these days don't have. Pick up any Xbox or PS2 game and you have tos pend hours memorizing what each button does, and combo's, etc.) I think tribes spoiled us (those of us who played it) and now companies are challenged with not only making a game with good graphics, but a game that runs fast, and keeps you intrested in it... which is hard to do.

On that note I also add that games today are completely RUINED by the community. by this I mean (and anyone who's played a MMORPG can agree with this) any little thing that a group of people finds wrong with the game, becomes a huge deal. The dev's are then torn between modifying this little thing, or not. And then the list grows because now that weapon x doesn't do so much damage or shoot as fast, weapon z should/should not do more/less damange or fire faster/slower.

The only comment i have about that is that I wish beta testers would report more on what doesn't work and needs to be fixed, instead of trying to change the game to fit their needs

anyways good article/post, and, oh btw, hi

Oh yes, PlanetSide suffers from its community, I'd say. Calls for the nerf-bat are quite constant in the official forums.

Myself, I kinda enjoy it when the devs majorly change a piece of equipment, whether that item is friendly or enemy. It just means I get to spend a while changing up my playstyle, which is something I enjoy.

I have friends in the industry that have been saying that about the community for years. It's the rsie of internet forums that have really made it a central part of game development.

But I'm with Bug...I play the game under the rules the developer set down, and if the rules change then I change my play style. That's what makes games fun, not winning all the time

Real Geeks don't make there own backups.
