Back to model building again!

Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

Back to model building again!

Post by BlackRider »

I needed a hobby to break the tedium of school and work. So today I went out and bought $20 in paints, thinners, and glues and a $10 Datsun 240Z. Haven't touched the car yet but I've spent several hours getting reacquainted with the tools of the trade. Airbrushing was a mess... I tried to start with a 1:1 paint/thinner solution but I think I ended up with 1:2 because I was so concerned with spilling thinner that I ended up with way too much! When I sprayed some cardboard you could hardly tell there was any paint in it. So I dumped that (there was too much thinner to just pour in more paint) and then tried the 3:1 solution that I was recommended on some website, but again I think I ended up with closer to 1:1. It was thin but worked out all right. Just for practice I repainted an old, red firebird body flat black. I'm just waiting for it to dry a bit before a 2nd coat. In the mean time I think I'll practice w/ knives, glues, and brushing.

(This was my first time using the airbrush. The last time I was into modeling was almost 10 years ago and I wasn't old enough to airbrush, so all of my old models are 100% hand painted.)

Oh, and if it doesn't look embarrassing when I'm done, I'll post pictures of my new Datsun. :P

One last thing... while looking at the Datsun body I found some mold marks that shouldn't be there... hopefully I can scrape them off w/ a knife, but I think I'll need a week's practice before I try that. (The date from the mold is 1972, so it must be a bit worn. :P)
COLORS!

Well, I'm working on a '71 hemicuda convertible. I've got the body orange, but I was thinking about having the hood black.

Should I black out the hood? Windscreen frame will be chrome and other details have yet to be done. Also, should I do racing stripes or some sort of pinstripes just for fun? What do you think would make it look good?

Here's what the body looks like right now after 3 coats of fluorescent red. (Looks orange enough to me.)

COLORS!
