Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

Bored of the Rings?

Post by BlackRider »

I was rereading some Douglas Adams books when I got the idea of looking for a copy of Bored of the Rings by Harvard Lampoon. The foreword blatantly states that the whole book was done for a quick buck... and from the first couple of chapters I've come to believe that it was a small effort done for a quick buck. Also it is quite dated... I believe it was written in the late sixties and so some puns and jokes haven't made sense in decades. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it but I am going to finish it.

It begins with a poem (of course):
"This Ring, no other, is made by the elves,
Who'd pawn their own mother to grab it themselves.
Ruler of creeper, mortal, and scallop,
This is a sleeper that packs quite a wallop.
The Power almighty rests in this Lone Ring.
The Power, alrighty, for doing your Own Thing.
If broken or busted, it cannot be remade.
If found, send to Sorhed (the postage is prepaid)."

Goodgulf the wizard says, "...Someone must take the ring to the Zazu Pits of Fordor, under the evil nose of the wrathful Sorhed, yet appear so unsuited to his task that he will not be soon found out."
Frito shivered in sympathy for such an unfortunate. "Then the bearer should be a complete and utter dunce," he laughed nervously.
Goodgulf glanced at Dildo, who nodded and casually flipped a small, shining object into Frito's lap. It was a ring.
"Congratulations," said Dildo somberly, "You've just won the booby prize."

There's a couple things, but most of it just gets dumb.

Characters:
Gandalf-Goodgulf
Bilbo-Dildo
Frodo-Frito
Sam-Spam
Pipin-Pepsi
Merry-Moxie
Gimli-Gimlet son of Groin
Legolas-Legolam
Aragorn-Arrowroot son of Arrowshirt

Anyone else read this book and is it worth completing or should I go back to Douglas Adams?
COLORS!

Read part of it a LONG time ago. It was part of a fantasy lit class I took in highschool.

I'd say finish it. Don't worry so much about some of the jokes. Unless it really drives you crazy that is.

<left>
Dragon Talon Mercenary

Member of the XMEN

Have a Nice Day!

</left>
