Come in! Have a margarita or root beer? How about some fresh trout? :)

I think the thing that chaps Gambino's hide is that MS wants to NOT support the product, but still keep the license for it.

That's STUPID IMO. If you aren't going to let something go, you should have to maintain it.

Quote:
Well there is a point when it is not cost effective to support outdated versions of software.

True. But look at the list:
Office XP DeveloperVisio 2000BackOffice Server 2000Office 2000 DeveloperOffice 2000 ToolsOffice 2000 MultilingualOffice 2000 Premium SR-1Office 2000 Service Pack 2Outlook 2000Project 2000SQL Server 7SQL Server 7 Service Pack 3Embedded Visual Tools 3.0Visual Studio 6 MSDEIE 5.5MapPoint 2002Visual Studio 6.0 SP3 and SP5Windows 98Windows 98 Y2KWindows 98 Resource KitWindows 98 SP1 (all win98 except SE)Windows NT 4.0ISA Server 2000Visual Basic for (Alpha Systems)

While I can see killing something like Win98 or NT4, a lot of these things are pretty much current version minus one or two. Everything on the list was sold by MS more recently than five years ago. When you buy something, how long do you expect it to last? Maybe if you buy the home edition of an OS for $100, it's no big deal when it's phased out three years later. But if you scraped up $1200 for, say, DevStudio 6, you'd like to see it maintained a little longer.

If, as Asha implied, they released the source, then the open-source community could maintain it and keep it current.

But what really bugs me is that they have the ability to do this and not worry about the consequences or unhappy customers, because they know enough people have to suck it up and buy the upgrade. I hate monopolies. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:"> This is the kind of arrogance that just about tore IBM apart with the anti-trust laws. And then they try to blame the issue on the Sun lawsuit, when the problem was theirs in the first place for not implementing Java like they agreed to, but their own little derivative.
