Anyone catch BSG?

Well?

I know there is a discussion going on in the BEML member's forum, but I thought I'd open up a topic here since not everyone has access to that forum.

Heck yes I watched it. I'm old enough that I watched the original, and I was young enough at the time that I didn't mind the campiness.

I have quibbles with some of the decisions they made, but overall I like what they've done with the franchise.

Anyone know how it went over with the suits? Did they like the ratings enough to make more of it?

Recorded it, haven't watched yet. I grew up on that show. Gotta love that they didn't care how they used three explosion shots for the entire run of the show.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

I have watched reruns of the original over the past decade and got some enjoyment from it. But this new one was awsome even though it was hard to get over them changing Starbuck and Boomer into women. Then at the end of the second episode you learn that Boomer is also a Cylon. Over all it kept me away from my studies for my exams and in front of the TV watching it. I want to see more. They did a great job writing the story and making it keep your attention.

*edit: Spoiler! I didn't like it... too much unnecessary sex (making out) kinda ruined the atmosphere... the corniness of the original is still there, but at least in the original they could act a little better. and its supposed to be 50 years later, right? shouldn't adama be 80-90 years old? I quit watching the second episode about 10 mins into it... just got too dumb for me to handle. Oh and they give you enough clues that you can predict most events 10-20 mins before they happen.

I'll put more thought into my criticisms later. (lunch break, no time to think)

Final thought... did the adama character learn to act from Shatner?
COLORS!

While I agree about them over-pushing the sex angle, you're missing a major point:
This version has NO plot continuity with the first. It's not supposed to. It keeps the basic ideas of the old series and remakes the whole thing, while keeping bits and pieces of things as a nod to the original, like similarities of ship design, the old theme scattered here and there, the chrome toasters, etc. This miniseries is the introduction/beginning of the BSG story.

You think the original was less corny and better acted than this? I'm afraid we just plain have a difference of opinion there.

FYI, the guy that played Adama in this is the same actor that played the cop that followed Harrison Ford around in "Blade Runner." I believe Lorne Greene's Adama was supposed to be like 147 years old, because they had very good medical tech. I've got the original book at home; I'll have to check.

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

This wasn't set after the original series, it's a retelling of the original story.

The old stuff in there was just there to pay homage to the original series. Plus it was a way to build suspense about the Cylons. It was well done.

And this is the first show for these actors with these characters. STNG was the same way, so was Babylon 5, and STTOS. They're all not great actors at first.

Although I'll have to heavily disagree with you about Edward James Olmos (the actor portraying Adama). He sounds like an honest real-life general. He was my favorite character too. Him and the one that played the female Cylon.

I didn't like the female Cylon because she was hot and sexy and all that. I liked her because she could portray a cold person well as she showed in the scene with the mother towards the beginning and in the scene with the human delegate in the very beginning. Yet, she also pulled off a genuine curiosity towards that same mother and her child in the beginning.

And all that sex? Show me a geek (or a man for that matter) that wouldn't at least consider letting "the hot dumb blonde" see the nifty computers, especially if they're having sex, and I'll show you a man that is gay. The sex was necessary. And it further set up Baltar's character... he always was the kind of person that thought of himself first.

Besides, it may also seem a bit cheesy since it is supposed to be a space opera... a genre that very few have taken on in recent years. The last that comes to mind for me were Space: Above and Beyond, Babylon 5, and Farscape. Though I'll admit that Farscape was kind of in it's own genre, so to speak.

Oh and about the sex: personally, I like to see some of that stuff in a story like this. It wouldn't be realistic for them to not ever kiss, or have sex, yet go out and kill hundreds of bad guys...

Horrible name but great idea for a story. Too bad the writin ggot weak and the show got cancelled. I still to this day think about the flapjack episode on almost a daily basis.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

ahhh... so I did misunderstand the plot... (missed the first 5 mins and saw all the 'new' stuff and all the stuff from the old series being considered 'obsolete'... and that and all the chrome domes are gone!... I want to see chrome domes and basestars.)

ok... so you've got me on those points... but I still don't like much of the screen writing... :P

Mav, I liked the Space Above and Beyond spaceships...
COLORS!

I liked SAAB because it was fairly realistic. No Super-technology, just believable machines and characters.

I haven't watched the new BSG yet but I don't like what I'm hearing. We need a race of robots trying to destroy the last of humanity. That's what the show was all about!
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Oh they kick humanity's ass big time. You see the destruction of Caprica (one of the 12 colonies) as the show progresses.

Very cool. Very realistic. It's how I'd do it, if I was given the task of utterly and completely destroying a species.

That was a big part of the problem. Every time I went to record it, I couldn't find the damn program.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

I liked SAAB. Didn't get to see the last episode - didn't know it was going to BE the last episode! I thought they set it up really well.

Was not a big fan of the original series and didn't watch very much of it. From what I can tell, I'll have to agree with Asha that this is a retelling of the original story. I'll also have to agree with the general consensus that the sex was overdone. The sex stuff could have been implied without harming the storyline; IMHO, it didn't have to be as explicit as it was.

I'm curious, though. In the original series, did they ever get to Earth? Does anyone know if they will do so in this series? Was Adama just making it up when it came to Earth, or was he sincere?

I'm gonna try and stay with this series. It looks pretty good.

<table *****'Filter: Shadow(Color=#0000FF,Direction=225)'>

<span class=''usertitle'>
XMENPorsche[DTM]
Retired Leader - XMEN
Retired Leader - DTM
Eater of Chicken Fried Steak

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." - Wayne Gretzky

"One of the hallmarks of a disciple of Jesus Christ is that he always leaves things better than he found it."

"The great need in our day is to move from knowing about God to a knowledge of God."

"Your problems are the window through which God will shake your life and allow you to see Him like never before."
- Chip Ingram
