Porsche, Gambit, or Ice...

Got a request from BEML to have a Team BIO put together.

I know the general info... but all I know before I came on was that you guys had played T1 and were looking to get into competing.

I know XMEN have been around since 1999 (February?). I know that you didn't have a lot of depth in your competitive roster until a bunch of us from DWE came on.

If I could get what you know (with as much detail as you can), then I can send something on to BEML for their team history and BIO pages.

I know that...

What's the history?

Did Ice and Porsche get into a TP fight in the bathroom, and when they both slipped on the wet floor, cried "OUCH!" and had the idea to create a tribe?

Well, it was primarily Iceman and Cyclops who wanted to do it. Cyclops and Wolverine (neither of which you'll know very well - W's never posted here, and Cyclops rarely and mostly early) and I would get together and play DOOM 2 at Wolverine's house. We started inviting Iceman, since DOOM supported four players. Cyclops somehow discovered Tribes, and got Iceman hooked. He'd tried and failed with me, as I only really enjoy playing with friends and at that point there was just us. But I'd willingly play at LAN parties. When he got Iceman going, they wanted to start a clan, so there were the three of us. The XMEN name was really pushed by Cyclops. Then Ice pestered Porsche until he tried it, and then he was hooked. Now there were four. We started recruiting people at work. Then, as afterward, Iceman was our chief recruiter. We had a respectable group of people from work playing most evenings, but not competitively, and we did have some LAN parties at that point. One was a housewarming party for me in this house; you can see pics from that one still on the site. One of our friends from work (Ender) moved to Kansas, I think, and so our focus really went out onto the internet from that point because Iceman didn't want to lose touch. So he met people online, and started inviting people, and people began joining! He or Porsche was introduced to the DTM and got us hooked up with that bunch, and I think you know the rest pretty well. Once you old DWE guys came in, it really took off. (Nothing like having an established presence...)

XMEN member
Card-carrying DTM
OKL Fish-napper

Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.
The Tao of Programming

Let me help a bit....

Like Gambino said, Ice got me involved in September, 99. By the end of the month I was hooked. In early October he told me about DTM. I applied and made it sometime around the first part of November. By the end of November, 99, Putz had decided that gaming was taking too much of his time (or something like that) and handed over the reigns of XMEN to me. By the end of December I decided that it would be cool to compete, but in order to do that we had to expand. I recruited Warhawk and Scorch, along with Goremonger (I honestly don't remember which accepted the invitation to join first). Warhawk started bringing in some of the DWE folks and we just started growing from there. We did our first ever scrims against the Renegades based clan, Stealth & Mutilation. We scrimmed them in Ultra Renegades 3, then Renegades, and then base. In the meantime, we had continued to recruit and bring more people into XMEN (mostly from DTM). It wasn't long after that when I found out about BEML (I forgot who brought it up to me). We applied to the league, got accepted, and went on from there. I stepped down from sole leadership in July/August 2000, whereby Iceputz took it over again.

Like Gambit said, you probably know the rest pretty well.

<table *****'Filter: Shadow(Color=#0000FF,Direction=225)'>

<span class=''usertitle'>
XMENPorsche[DTM]
Retired Leader - XMEN
Retired Leader - DTM
Eater of Chicken Fried Steak

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." - Wayne Gretzky

"One of the hallmarks of a disciple of Jesus Christ is that he always leaves things better than he found it."

"The great need in our day is to move from knowing about God to a knowledge of God."

"Your problems are the window through which God will shake your life and allow you to see Him like never before."
- Chip Ingram

Darn it, I knew I'd leave something (someone!) out.

RJ's been a good friend of Iceman's for years and was one of the early players, but I don't remember exactly when or how he came onboard.
Why don't you fill it in from your perspective, r00d?

He then proceed to mercilessly beat the crap out of me in Tribes. Later, I went out and bought Tribes. I was about to return it to the store when I figured out that it was strictly a multi-player, online game. But, I stuck it out (with a 200Mhz CPU running in software rendering mode )...went through the training missions...played some more at Ice's house. I remember how exciting it was to venture out through my 28kbps modem connection and find Iceman online for a laggy game of Tribes. Ice also got me hooked on the DTM Ezboard. Not too long after that, he started spamming me (and everyone else) about forming a tribe. I knew nothing of the XMEN comics although I had heard of them. I was actually against us naming the tribe, "XMEN". I thought the tag would be too long (back when the tag had to be part of your 15 character name) and I knew there were already a couple of XMEN clans. Luckily, noone listened to me. Since we ended up being XMEN, I chose a unique name to avoid confusion with other XMEN clans.

I've said this before...From the very beginning, ICEMAN was always the glue that held us together. Although clan members came and went, Iceman and Porsche worked hard to make sure that we never lost sight of what we were originally...a group of Friends who enjoyed playing a good quality game together. The DTM dovetailed so nicely with what we were all about that it doesn't surprise me that we helped fill out it's ranks during it's height.

Iceman had a great bunch of friends and I'm glad that I was able to come to know them through him.

S! to that scruffy bunch of geeks who decided to become this XMEN clan.

For my small part. I was one of the first guys from DTM accepted here. That's really all there is to say about that. I think by now any other clan would have dropped me off and left me to the wolves. I was never very good at Tribes, but I did my best where I could.

Instead getting dropped, you guys have been more of a friends-first kinda thing with me. I doubt I will have a DSL or equivalent connection for a long time coming, and with this game, its almost live or die necessary to have to play. I say, "almost" here because of what I have seen Ambush Bug do. Wow.

My fondest memories of this clan is our time of chasing each other around in rabbit - and one day when a missile that was locked onto me killed a turret my corpse landed on. I was 2337!! I laughed so hard I flooded the net. I switched off voice-activated after that.

That is my part in our clan's history.
"Patience is a virtue ... for other people." -Ravok
