Drive it if you can. If you like a '72 you'll like any chrome bumper year. And I don't mean that in a bad way.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

It looks like it could be a really nice car. Something makes me nervous though. He's trying really hard to make it sound better than it is. I'd check it out VERY thoroughly to be safe.

Pros:
- It's already restored
- Canvas tops are expensive ($500 or so)
- Nice carpet in trunk
- Leather door panels are nice if you like the looks (not original)
- Looks like a Moto-Lita steering wheel (expensive)

Cons
- WTF is with the wiring under the hood?!?!?
- No cover on fuse box (prolly because there are wires coming out like spaghetti!)
- Those air cleaners look nice but are not very good functionally.
- "All gauges work except Speedo and blinkers" WTF? Not many to begin with!
- Car is later model (padded dash, different gauges, side marker lamps, etc.) but this is personal preference.
- He's lying (or ignorant) about the grill. That is NOT the original grill nor did that style even come on that year model. It's a cheap replica. It's a common modification because the early grills were so beautiful but lying is a big red flag to me.
- Paint in engine bay looks old, suggests it's not a ground-up restoration (makes sense with the low price)
- WTF is with the wiring under the dash?

If you don't mind a later model it could be a very nice car. If it's in the condition he claims then it won't need much work to be very nice. It would definately save you money , time and knuckles to buy the best car you can afford rather than a resto project. You can easily spend $10,000+ and years of time restoring one of these cars fromthe ground up.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Do MG's normally have 4 cylinder engines? (It would make sense... but it just struck me as kind of odd.)

And Mav is right... any exposed wiring like that in the engine compartment is a bad sign. To me it says he tried to fix an electrical problem and did it by putting wires in potentially dangerous places. As well as not identifying the problem.

It's shoddy workmanship, and potentially a fire and electrical hazard. Would suck to have one of those wires lose its insulation, then ground out on the engine block. What if it's a wire for your headlights? Even if it's to a not exactly essential system, having insulation burn is a fire hazard.

At least he didn't put the wires over the exhaust manifold....

You can tell that he put a lot of effort into the car's looks too. Which should make you think fifty times about wanting to buy the car.
(Easiest way to get rid of a car is to hide the imperfections. )

I do agree with you Asha on all counts. However the one thing that makes me feel this car could potentially be a good specimen is the quality of some of the parts. The carpet in the trunk is padded and edged. That must have cost several hundred dollars. The convertible top appears to be Stayfast Canvas which costs around $500 as compared to the normal vinal type which runs $150-175. Also real leather interior versus vinal even in places where the factory only used vinal. The leather in the cockpit probably cost in the neighborhood of $1500-2000. Vinal would have cost $800 or so.

If the chassis is sound then the worst of it is over. Electrical problems can be remedied by rewiring the car as a weekend project if you know electrics.

As for engines, there were a few variations in these cars...

MGB and MGB GT (1962 - 1980) used an 1800cc 4-cylinder OHV pushrod engine.
MGC and MGC GT (1967-1969) incorporated a 2912cc Straight 6-cylinder unit.
MGB GT V8 (1973 - 1976) used a Rover Aluminum 3532cc V8 engine.

Of course there are many, many more models offered by MG over the years but these are the cars which pertain to the type BR is looking at. Or you can spend as much money as you want and tweak the stock engine like THIS guy.
<img src="http://www.camerasupport.com/oV/mavsigr ...

Whelp... that one's sold anyway. (I did notice the wiring... but wire's cheap.)

This is the '71 that I was going to see: <a href="http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline ...

I might go this weekend... but I must have at that thing w/ some 'rust detectors' (screwdriver, magnet, and other things to poke and pound at questionable spots) before it will interest me beyond a test drive (joy ride).

Still looking and still may consider the MGA route. (if I can find a good frame/body to rebuild). I all depends on what I want when I'm ready to buy.

*edit* best bet MGA so far: <a href="http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline ...
COLORS!
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub141.ezboard.com/bxmenclan.sho ... ckRider at: 12/9/03 4:25 pm

LOL! He did the same thing I did to my wiring years ago to "save" an old wiring harness. Browsing eBay I came across this...

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ...

This car is probably worth more than the Buy It Now price.
